IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

This diagram provides a manual of how a mechanical arm works and how the arm function joints work in the same fashion as a human arm.

Overall, it is clear that a mechanical arm works same way as the human arm with its several joints which allow it to move in several directions. The entire system is computerised along with the gripper which can be replaced by alternative tools.

Firstly it can be seen that a mechanical arm is operated by a computer which has control over three motors having different properties. First motor it can be seen that helps power elbow's movement which gives it the flexibility. The second motor is controlling the wrist which is enabling it to rotate. In addition the third motor works with gripper which consists of built in sensors and it helps raising and lowering the arm while pivot allows the hole arm to rotate all of this structure is supported by a base.

At the end of of the mechanical arm there is a gripper which has built in sensors which controls the amount of force applied when holding objects. Furthermore grippers can be replaced by alternative end effectors which consist of spray paint, drill holes, and weld metals all of them having different purpose. such as spray paint for painting surfaces drill for holes welding for heavy metals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the diagram’s main components and give an overview that the arm is computer-controlled, has several joints, and can use alternative tools. You also report the functions of the elbow, wrist, gripper, shoulder, pivot and base, so the response addresses the task. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the third motor is said to help raise and lower the arm, whereas the diagram assigns that function to the shoulder; the pivot enables rotation. The comparison with a human arm is asserted but not explained, and the alternative end-effectors are listed without clearly distinguishing the tools from their uses. More precise reporting of the motor connections and a fuller comparison would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. Sequencing words such as “Overall,” “Firstly” and “Furthermore” help signal the progression, and the reader can generally follow the description from computer control to the arm’s components and tools. However, the first detail paragraph packs several functions into one long sentence, making the relationships between the motors, gripper, shoulder and pivot difficult to track. Repetition of “gripper” and “built in sensors” in the final paragraph also weakens progression. Use separate sentences or clearer grouping for the control system, joints and end-effectors, and ensure references such as “it” and “all of this structure” have clear antecedents.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “motors,” “flexibility,” “pivot,” “sensors” and “alternative end effectors.” These terms help communicate the diagram’s main features, and the meaning is generally clear. Some choices are imprecise or awkward, however: “manual” does not accurately describe a diagram, “different properties” is vague, and “weld metals” does not express the process as naturally as “weld metal.” There is also repetition of “gripper” and “built in sensors.” Aim for more precise technical phrasing and natural collocations, such as describing the computer as controlling the motors and the gripper’s sensors as regulating applied force. Check compound forms such as “end-effectors” and “built-in.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which” and additions introduced by “while” and “Furthermore.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some errors in sentence construction, agreement and punctuation reduce accuracy. For example, “First motor it can be seen that helps power…” is not a complete, well-formed clause, while “the third motor works with gripper which consists…” has unclear clause attachment. In “sensors which controls,” the plural subject requires a plural verb. The final sentence also joins several ideas without adequate sentence boundaries. Build each sentence around a clear subject and verb, check agreement, and use full stops to separate the functions of different components.
