IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram shows that a mechanical arm funtion in a way that is similr to the human arm.
Overall, the mechanical arm consist motar which is attached to each of its part like, wrist gripper, elbow, shoulder which all of them have similar function of that human hand.
To start with, base which is stationary and movable to that base a pivot is attched in between them which enable arm to rotate and a shoulder helps it to raises or lowerarm by help of motar. Just like human hand through the shoulder an elbow is attached which allows movement and gives flexibility by a motar at its end unlike hand wrist is attached for gripping items to control forces by a sensors built by motar an alternative end-effector to flex or rotate. However this all sensors are connected through motar which are controlled by computer.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the diagram as a comparison between a mechanical arm and a human arm, and you mention several relevant components, including the base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist, motors and computer. However, the account is incomplete and some functions are confused: the gripper has sensors that control force, while the wrist allows the gripper or another end-effector to flex or rotate. Your description assigns gripping and force control to the wrist. You also omit the alternative end-effectors and their uses, and there is no clear overview of how the system is controlled and what it can do. The response is also below the required 150 words. To develop the report, accurately cover the main components and their functions, including the interchangeable tools.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence, moving from an introductory statement to an overview and then a description beginning with the base. This gives the reader some sense of organisation, and phrases such as “To start with” and “However” attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression becomes difficult to follow in the long final paragraph, where several components and functions are packed into one sentence. The relationship between the wrist, gripper, sensors and motors is especially unclear. Paragraphing is also limited, and the overview repeats the introduction rather than clearly previewing the main features. Use separate, logically ordered sentences for the base and joints, the end-effector, and the computer control; make each linking word express the relationship accurately.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “pivot,” “flexibility,” “sensors,” “motar” (motor) and “end-effector,” which helps identify parts of the diagram. There is also an attempt to describe functions with phrases such as “raises or lower” and “control forces.” However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the description less precise, including “funtion,” “similr,” “attched” and “motar.” Some expressions are awkward or inaccurate, such as “attached to each of its part” and “a sensors built by motar.” Aim for accurate technical collocations: for example, say that motors are controlled by a computer and that sensors regulate the force applied by the gripper. Proofreading spelling and choosing precise component names will improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a pivot … which enable arm to rotate” and a comparison introduced by “Just like.” However, grammatical errors are frequent enough to make some relationships difficult to understand. Examples include missing articles and agreement in “the mechanical arm consist motar,” “a pivot … which enable,” and “a sensors”; the verb forms in “helps it to raises” and “lowerarm”; and the unclear construction “which all of them have similar function.” The final sentence also joins several ideas without clear grammatical boundaries. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals and verb patterns, and divide long sentences into shorter units. This will make your technical explanations easier to follow.
