IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
the process diagram dileneates the working and formation of arm function that perform arm as the similar way as human arm.
Taking a holistic view, it is clearly evident that the
computer works on the precised sovereignty of the three motors in it. Then, each motor conducts it's own different function. All works in alternative sections of the arm. Therefore, it helps a lot in the manufacturation.
Firstly, the role of motors are prominent. One motor acts as the shoulder of the arm which rises and lowers it. Another one is the elbow that gives elasticity and the third one does the important role as gripper. Although, there are some other sections in the arm that are vital for it like pivot which is the main point that readily accepts the arm to mobe roundably.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the diagram as showing a mechanical arm and mentions the computer, three motors, shoulder, elbow, gripper and pivot, so it includes some relevant features. However, it does not accurately explain the motors’ connections: the motors control the elbow, the arm section near the wrist, and the gripper; they are not themselves the shoulder, elbow and gripper. Important details are omitted, including the wrist’s flexing or rotating function, the base, and the alternative end-effectors and their uses. The overview is vague, and the final paragraph is cut off, leaving the report incomplete. The response is also 14 words below the required minimum. To improve, describe the components and their functions precisely and cover the diagram’s main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is an attempt to organise the report with an opening, an overview, and sequencing words such as “Firstly” and “Furthermore.” However, the ideas do not progress clearly: the overview repeats general claims about the motors, while the next paragraph lists components without explaining their relationships accurately. Phrases such as “All works in alternative sections” and “Therefore, it helps a lot” do not make the connections between ideas clear. The final “Furtherm” is unfinished, which disrupts the ending and leaves the structure incomplete. Use separate paragraphs for the overall arrangement and the component functions, and connect each detail to the relevant part of the diagram.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response attempts some topic-specific vocabulary, including “motors,” “shoulder,” “elbow,” “gripper,” and “pivot,” which helps identify the subject. However, the range is limited, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “precised sovereignty,” “manufacturation,” and “accepts the arm to mobe roundably.” These expressions make it difficult to understand the intended functions. There are also spelling errors, including “dileneates” and “mobe.” Aim for precise, conventional language for describing diagrams, such as “controls,” “raises and lowers,” “allows rotation,” and “is attached to.” This would make the report clearer without requiring unnecessarily elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes some simple sentences and attempts longer structures, for example, “Although, there are some other sections in the arm that are vital for it like pivot…” However, control is inconsistent. Errors include “the role of motors are prominent,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “the computer works on the precised sovereignty,” where the sentence structure does not clearly express the intended relationship. The phrase “Another one is the elbow that gives elasticity and the third one does the important role as gripper” also combines ideas awkwardly and omits an article before “gripper.” The unfinished final word further interrupts the text. Use straightforward sentence patterns and check agreement, articles, and complete sentence boundaries.
