IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The illustration provides information on how a mechanical arm functions and the way the jonints that build up the arm works in the similar way as those in a human arm. Here is a breakdown of the main features and comparison in respect to human arms.

Overall the structure of the mechanical arm completely refelects our arms and can be said that it's design is influenced from the actual human arms.

So the base of the arms which is not fixed but rather flexible exactly reflecting our arm in terms of flexibility. Moving forward which is the pivot that enables the mechanical arms to rotate like human arms. Then comes the elbow which definitely the same as our elbow and does the identical function. Lastly comes the wrist and gripper part where gripper helps to grip thing as like our fingers and wrist helps to do these thing more efficiently. There are three motors in respectively shoulder, elbow, and gripper areas which are controlled by computer and this will by brain in case of human for the flexible movement and rotation of the different parts of the arms.

The mechanical arms highly resembles our human arms and the parts of the mechanical arms also named afer the human arms to give the clear reflection of human arms.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the subject and mention several relevant components, including the base, pivot, elbow, wrist, gripper and computer-controlled motors. However, the response only partly reports the diagram: it focuses mainly on broad comparisons with a human arm and omits key functions shown, such as the shoulder raising and lowering the arm, the wrist allowing flexion or rotation, and the gripper’s sensors controlling force. Some details are inaccurate: the base is usually stationary, not “not fixed but rather flexible,” and the diagram does not say the mechanical arm completely reflects a human arm. The alternative end-effectors are also missing. To improve, give a factual overview of the system and describe the main labelled functions without adding unsupported comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an opening, an overview and a body paragraph, and it generally moves from the base towards the arm’s upper parts. This gives the reader some organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear: “Moving forward which is the pivot” and “Then comes the elbow” are awkward transitions, while the final paragraph repeats the claim that the mechanical arm resembles a human arm rather than adding information. The sequence also does not clearly explain how the computer, motors and joints relate to one another. Use paragraphs to separate the overall arrangement from the component functions, and connect each feature with precise references such as “above the base” or “at the end of the forearm.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “pivot,” “elbow,” “wrist,” “gripper,” “motors” and “rotation,” so the subject is recognisable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “grip thing,” “do these thing more efficiently” and “in respect to human arms.” Repetition of “mechanical arms” and “human arms” also limits flexibility. There are noticeable spelling errors, including “jonints,” “refelects” and “afer,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, diagram-specific wording—for example, “the gripper holds objects” and “the shoulder raises and lowers the arm”—and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer structures, including “There are three motors … which are controlled by computer,” but control is inconsistent and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences difficult to follow. For example, “the way the jonints that build up the arm works” has faulty agreement and clause structure, while “the base of the arms which is not fixed but rather flexible exactly reflecting our arm” lacks a clear main clause. Articles and plurals are also unreliable in “grip thing” and “these thing,” and the sentence beginning “So the base…” is a fragment. Use complete, direct sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, articles and plural forms. Shorter accurate descriptions would make the information easier to understand.
