IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The given concept diagram illustrates the mechanical arm works , and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm .

Over all it can be seen that the computer precision control of motors to connect 3 motors . One motor can connect the shoulder raises / lower arm in mechanical arm . And second motor can connect the elbow allows movement/gives flexibility in the mechanical arm . And the Third motor can connect the gripper built-in sensors control force . The base ( usually stationary/ occasionally moveable ) is connect to under the mechanical arm . And one main point of the mechanical arm in pivot enables arm to rotate . The point of mechanical arm is shoulder raises lower arm . And the gripper built-in sensors control force can connect wrist allows gripper ( or alternative end effector ) to flex/rotate.

Taking about the final step all these things can work the mechanical arm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify several relevant components, including the computer, motors, base, pivot, shoulder, elbow, wrist and gripper, and you mention that the gripper has sensors. However, the response gives only a minimal account of how these parts work together and does not clearly summarise the diagram’s main features. The motor connections are also misreported: the diagram links the three motors to the elbow, the arm section near the wrist, and the gripper, not respectively to the shoulder, elbow and gripper as stated. The alternative end-effectors—spray painting, drilling and welding—are omitted. The response is 142 words, below the 150-word minimum. Add an accurate overview and explain the arm’s movements and alternative uses.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is an attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and using “Over all” and “Taking about the final step” to signal later points. You also group several components together. However, the ideas do not progress in a clear sequence: the motors are described first, then the base and pivot, before the shoulder and gripper connections are repeated. Several sentences are fragments or difficult to follow, such as “One motor can connect the shoulder raises / lower arm.” Repetition of “mechanical arm” and “can connect” does not make the relationships clearer. Organise the description from the computer and motors through the base and joints to the gripper, and use clear linking phrases to show each part’s function.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “precision control,” “pivot,” “flexibility,” “built-in sensors,” and “alternative end effector.” These terms show an attempt to describe the diagram rather than relying entirely on general language. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “can connect” and “mechanical arm.” Some word choices are imprecise for describing the diagram: “Taking about the final step” does not clearly introduce a final stage, and “moveable” is less suitable than “movable.” Aim for more precise verbs and collocations, such as “is linked to,” “allows the arm to rotate,” and “raises or lowers the arm.” This would make the description clearer and less repetitive.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts both simple statements and longer sentences, and the opening sentence shows an effort to introduce the diagram’s subject. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors frequently make relationships between parts difficult to understand. For example, “The given concept diagram illustrates the mechanical arm works” needs a structure such as “illustrates how the mechanical arm works.” In “One motor can connect the shoulder raises / lower arm,” the verb pattern is incomplete, while “The base … is connect to under the mechanical arm” has errors in verb form and sentence structure. Articles, agreement, and punctuation are also unreliable, including inconsistent capitalisation of “Third.” Practise complete sentences with accurate verb forms, for example, “The shoulder raises and lowers the arm.”
