IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The figure represents how a mechanical arm use, and the joints that utilize the arm parts in the same situation as in a people arm.
Overall, the three motors are joined by precision and managed by computers and varius kind of alternative end effectors are used such as spray paint, drill holes and weld metal.
Looking in to the process of figure, different motors are used for different ideas. The first one is used as base and shoulder. The second is as elbow which allows movement and third as gripper which built in sensors control face.
Turning towards in to the same figure, Pivot are involved in base such as usually stationary and occassionally movable that enables arm to rotate in a motion. Likewise, wrist is added to hold the gripper and make it easier to rotate or flex and repeats the same process wisely.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant features, including the computer-controlled motors, the pivot and wrist, and the alternative end-effectors. However, the description only partially reports how the arm is arranged and functions. In particular, the motors are not “joined by precision”; the computer controls them, and the first motor is not described as the base and shoulder. The elbow’s role is mentioned, but the shoulder’s raising and lowering function and the gripper’s force sensors are not accurately explained (“control face”). The comparison with a human arm is also not developed. The response is five words below the required minimum, and the limited coverage leaves important features unclear. A fuller, accurate overview followed by the arm’s sequence of parts would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an overview followed by two sections of detail, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Likewise” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the parts are not described in their physical order: the base and shoulder are grouped with the first motor, while the elbow and gripper are assigned to other motors without a clear explanation. Some linking phrases are awkward or do not clarify relationships, as in “Turning towards in to the same figure.” The final sentence combines the pivot, wrist and gripper without a clear transition. Organise the description from the base upwards to the gripper, and use connectors to show position and function rather than adding them mechanically.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “motors,” “pivot,” “gripper,” “flex” and “rotate,” which helps identify components and actions. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear. For example, “motors are joined by precision” does not express that a computer controls them precisely, and “different ideas” is too vague for the motors’ functions. “Control face” appears to be an inaccurate choice for controlling force, while “repeats the same process wisely” does not convey a clear diagram feature. There are also spelling errors such as “varius” and “occassionally.” Use precise verbs and nouns from the diagram, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few longer sentence forms, including clauses beginning with “which” and “that,” but control is inconsistent and the range remains limited. Errors occur in basic sentence construction and agreement: “how a mechanical arm use” needs a correctly formed verb, and “Pivot are involved” has a singular subject with a plural verb. The phrase “the gripper which built in sensors control face” lacks a clear grammatical structure, making the intended meaning difficult to recover. Articles and prepositions are also often missing or misplaced, as in “Looking in to the process of figure.” Aim first for accurate simple sentences describing each component, then combine them with relative clauses. Careful proofreading for verb forms, agreement and sentence boundaries would improve clarity.
