IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given picture describes just like the way human arm function, mechanical arm funtions similarly. The joints that make the mechanical arm are just like the human arm. The summary of the information and reported main chracteristics are shown in the given diagram.
Base of the arm is usually non-moveable. Although it is moveable on certain times while fixing or removing. Shoulder raises or lowers the whole arm. There is a pivot attached to the shoulder which enables arm to rotate in directions. Elbow allows movement and provides streching to the arm. Wrist is just between the albow and gripper which enables gripper rotate and flex.
There are a number of motors in mechanical arm. First motor is present in the base. Second motor is present in the albow while the third one is in the gripper. All these motors are conrolled by the computer.
With these mechanical arm, people can do various works, including spray paint, drill holes and weld metal. The funtions are not limited to these works.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant components and functions, including the base, shoulder, pivot, elbow, wrist, gripper, computer control and alternative uses. However, the account only partially represents the diagram: it does not clearly explain the arm’s overall arrangement or how the computer’s three motors connect to different parts. The motor locations are also misreported: the diagram shows motors controlled by the computer, with connections to the elbow, the arm near the wrist, and the gripper—not one motor in the base and another in the elbow. The comparison with a human arm is asserted but not developed. A clearer overview of the system and more accurate reporting of the motor connections would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has some organisation: it moves from the base and joints to the motors and then to possible uses, and the paragraph breaks help distinguish these topics. However, there is no clear overall progression from an overview of how the system works to its component details. The opening repeats the idea that the mechanical arm functions like a human arm without establishing the main features, while transitions between the parts are limited. The sequence of motor descriptions is also difficult to follow and does not match the diagram’s connections. Use a brief overview first, then describe the arm from its base upwards, before explaining computer control and alternative end-effectors. This would make the information easier to track.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant task vocabulary such as “pivot,” “gripper,” “flex,” “rotate,” and “weld metal,” so the reader can identify many of the components and functions. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or awkward, which can make details less clear. For example, “provides stretching to the arm” is not a natural description of the elbow’s function, and “moveable on certain times” is imprecise. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “funtions,” “chracteristics,” “albow,” and “conrolled.” Aim for precise technical phrasing such as “allows the arm to bend” and “the base is usually stationary,” and check spelling carefully. This would improve clarity and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Most sentences are short and simple, and you attempt a few more complex forms, such as “Although it is moveable on certain times while fixing or removing.” However, this clause is incomplete and its relationship to the preceding sentence is unclear. Other sentence patterns also contain frequent errors: “The joints that make the mechanical arm are just like the human arm” has an unclear comparison, while “Wrist is just between the albow and gripper” needs articles. In “First motor is present in the base,” the article is also missing, and “With these mechanical arm” has a number-agreement problem. Practise forming complete sentences with accurate articles and agreement, and use a wider range of structures only when you can control them reliably.
