IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram shows the mechanical arm works and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in human arm.
In the overview, the computer - precision is the main to control of the motors while the motors are using to move the mechanical arm.
The mechanical arm works, there are three motors to function or to move the mechanical arm, the first motor is in the gripper - built-in sensor control force, the second motor is in the elbows - allows movement/gives flexibility, and the last motor is in the pivot and shoulder. However, there are alternative end-effector (spray paint/drill holes/weld metal). Moreover, base (usually stationary/occasionally movable) and writ - allows gripper (or alternative end-effector) to flex/ rotate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the diagram as a mechanical arm and mention the computer, motors, joints, base, wrist and alternative end-effectors, so the response is relevant to the task. However, several key relationships are misreported: the first motor is not in the gripper, and the last motor is not in the pivot and shoulder. The overview is also unclear and does not accurately summarise how the computer controls the motors or how the arm’s parts work together. The comparison with a human arm is not developed. The response is 105 words, below the required 150, and this limits the detail you can provide. Describe the components in their correct positions and explain their functions to give a fuller account.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic structure: an opening sentence, an attempted overview, and a paragraph describing components. This gives the reader some sense of the topic. However, the information does not progress clearly from the computer and motors through the arm to its end-effectors. The sequence “first motor,” “second motor,” and “last motor” is confusing because the motor connections are not described accurately, and “Moreover” introduces details without clarifying their relationship to the preceding points. The overview also repeats the idea that motors move the arm rather than establishing the main features. Organise the description in the diagram’s order and use linking phrases to show how each part connects to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use several relevant technical terms from the diagram, including “precision,” “motors,” “gripper,” “pivot,” “flexibility,” and “alternative end-effector.” This gives you an adequate task-related vocabulary, and the reader can generally recognise the components you mean. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “the computer - precision is the main to control” and “motors are using to move.” There are also inconsistent or incorrect forms, including “sensor” where the diagram refers to “sensors,” and “writ” for “wrist.” Aim for precise descriptions of function, such as “controls the motors” and “allows the gripper to rotate,” and check technical terms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt more than one sentence pattern, including a relative clause in “the joints that make up the arm” and a longer sentence beginning “The mechanical arm works.” This shows some willingness to use connected structures. However, errors in verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “the mechanical arm works” needs a clearer clause structure, “motors are using to move” should use a passive form such as “motors are used to move,” and “in the same way as those in human arm” needs an article before “human arm.” The final sentence also joins several separate features without a clear grammatical relationship. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses.
