IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The picture below portray how a mechanical arm works, or how the joints that make the up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm.
In the first is, mechancial start the computer precision to control of motors. Secondly, motors divided into three parts. First motor is working releted to gripper. It is better to built in sensors control force. The wrist allows gripper to flex and rotate. Moreover, second motor is working to elblow. It is best for movement flexibility. It is pivot to enables arm to rotate.
On the other hand, third motor is working to shoulder. It is best to raise and lower arm. It is base for usually stationary movable. Futhermore, finally mechanical start the work with alternative end effectors.
Overall, mechanical start the arm works. He joints that make the up the arm functions in the same for human arms.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify several relevant components, including the computer, motors, gripper, wrist, elbow, shoulder, pivot and alternative end-effectors. However, the account misreports key connections: the first motor is linked to the elbow, not the gripper, and the third motor is linked to the gripper, not the shoulder. The base and the arm’s overall arrangement are also unclear, while the overview (“mechanical start the arm works”) does not summarise the main features accurately. The alternative tools are mentioned but not specified as spraying paint, drilling or welding. The response is 136 words, below the required 150, and 14 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count. Add an accurate overview and describe the components and their functions more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has paragraph breaks and attempts to guide the reader with “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Moreover,” and “On the other hand.” These signals show an effort to organise the description. However, the sequence does not follow the diagram clearly, and the motor-to-component relationships are presented in a confusing order. “On the other hand” suggests a contrast that is not present, while “Overall” introduces a conclusion that repeats the opening rather than summarising the process. Several sentences are difficult to connect, such as “It is pivot to enables arm to rotate.” Group the description into a clear overview and a logical account of the control system, arm joints and end-effectors; use linking words only when their meaning fits.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant technical vocabulary, including “motors,” “gripper,” “wrist,” “pivot,” “sensors” and “end effectors,” which helps identify parts of the diagram. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the description hard to understand: “mechanical start,” “motors divided into three parts,” and “It is better to built in sensors” do not express the intended meanings clearly. There are also spelling errors such as “mechancial,” “releted” and “elblow.” Aim for precise process language and accurate collocations, for example, say that the computer controls the motors and that the gripper has built-in sensors. Naming the alternative tools would also make the vocabulary more specific.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both short statements and longer sentences, and the basic subject–verb pattern is sometimes visible. However, grammatical errors are frequent and can obscure the relationships between parts. For example, “The picture below portray” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “the joints that make the up the arm” has an incorrect word order. In “It is pivot to enables arm to rotate,” the infinitive construction is faulty, and “base for usually stationary movable” lacks a clear grammatical structure. Articles and verb forms are also often missing or incorrect. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with clauses such as “which allows the arm to rotate.” Check agreement, articles and infinitives during proofreading.
