IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The picture illustrates how a mechanical arm is working and their joints make the similar function as those in human arm.

Overall, mechanical arm is used as human arm with the help of the tree motors which is controlled by computer command.

Looking at the diagram, these motors have advanced functioning with all three motors have their own function. First of all, motor raises or lowers the shoulder at base which is moveable while pivot allows arm to rotate. Additionally, second motor helps in elbow of arm which allows movement and gives more flexibility and this is long rod which is called wrisit and it allows gripper or alternative end-effector to flex or rotate at that particular point. Moreover, third motor commands the gripper that build in sensors control force. These mechanical arms are used in manufacturing of spray paint, drills holes, weld metals etcetra.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the diagram’s main subject and mention the computer-controlled motors, several joints, the gripper, and alternative uses. However, the account only partially reports how the arm works: the motor-to-joint connections are confused, and the base is incorrectly described as movable, whereas it is usually stationary and only occasionally movable. The overview, “mechanical arm is used as human arm,” is too general to summarise the key comparison or operation clearly. The response also contains fewer than the required 150 words. To strengthen the report, give a concise overview of the computer’s control of the motors and the arm’s main movements, then describe each joint and its function accurately, including the end-effectors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic sequence, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the motors and then possible applications. Linking expressions such as “First of all,” “Additionally,” and “Moreover” help signal progression. However, the order of the components is not consistently clear, and the long third paragraph combines several functions in a way that makes the relationships difficult to follow. For example, the sentence beginning “Additionally, second motor…” shifts from the elbow to the wrist without clearly explaining how the parts connect. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the detailed description, and organise the body in the arm’s physical order—from base and shoulder to elbow, wrist, and gripper. Clearer references to each motor would also improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “pivot,” “gripper,” “motor,” “flexibility,” and “alternative end-effector,” which shows some ability to describe a technical diagram. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the description less precise. “Tree motors” appears to mean “three motors,” while “manufacturing of spray paint, drills holes, weld metals” does not accurately express that alternative tools can spray paint, drill holes, or weld metal. “Build in sensors” should be expressed as “built-in sensors.” Aim for precise verbs and natural collocations, and check spelling carefully; for example, “wrist” is misspelled as “wrisit.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses such as “which allows movement and gives more flexibility.” However, errors are frequent, and some sentence structures make the relationships between parts difficult to understand. Examples include “their joints make the similar function,” “all three motors have their own function,” and “which is moveable,” where articles, agreement, or clause construction need correction. The opening also shifts awkwardly between “illustrates” and “is working.” Use straightforward, accurate sentences first, then add relative clauses where they clearly describe a component. Check articles and agreement, and avoid joining several separate functions into one sentence.
