IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Eco-tourism has become increasingly common as its industry is expanding following the environmental concern. Although this change can reduce the commercial benefits, I believe this a positive trend to travel in environment friendly ways for individual and national benefits.

One major advantage of following environmental friendly tourism is that they can replace the pollutions and misuse of natural resources. Although, commercial benefits like better hotels with upgrade facilities may ensure better experience for tourists, but it pollute the environment and can cause water pollution. For example, house-boat facilities in Tanguar haor in our country, attracted a lot of tourists initially, but after several months, it lost its charm. Consequesntly, water of the haor was polluted because of the continuos wastes from the boats.

Furthermore, eco-tourism can help to save the wild habitats of environments, whereas digitalization destroy the natural habitats and disrupts their regular life. While it would help people to get a better picture of nature and animals, the animals will no longer feel disturbed by tourists. For instance, several tourist company had offered Sundarban stay over last year. Unfortunately, the lives of tourists were at risk because of wild animals during the stay, morever, there were reports of killing a rare snake during the stayover. However, government banned stay over in Sundarban after this incident.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that tourism brings out several benefits for a country while representating its natural beauty at international platform. Thus, I think eco -tourism can be really helpful with a combination approach of saving environment and enjoying nature while influencing people to more nature friendly practices.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you consider the growth of eco-tourism positive, and you give two relevant reasons—reducing environmental damage and protecting wildlife. The examples of pollution in Tanguar Haor and the Sundarban stayovers help connect your points to real situations. However, the discussion only partly develops the task. The opening claim that eco-tourism may reduce “commercial benefits” is not explained, and the conclusion introduces tourism’s national benefits without showing how these support your argument. The second body paragraph also shifts between habitat protection, tourists’ safety, and an incident involving a snake, so the central benefit is not fully clear. Explain each reason more directly and show how the examples demonstrate the positive effects of responsible tourism.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Furthermore,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because ideas are joined without a clear relationship. In the first body paragraph, the contrast about commercial benefits leads into pollution, but the connection to eco-tourism needs to be made explicit. In the second, “whereas digitalization” introduces an unrelated comparison, and the shift from wildlife disturbance to tourist safety is abrupt. Some linking is also mechanical or inaccurate, as in “Although… but.” Build each paragraph around one main point, then explain and illustrate it in a consistent order, using references that make clear what “they” and “it” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “natural resources,” “wild habitats,” “water pollution,” and “environmentally-friendly,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “commercial benefits” and “international platform.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unclear, which limits precision: “replace the pollutions” does not express the intended idea, and “a combination approach” is awkward. Several spelling errors, including “Consequesntly,” “continuos,” and “morever,” are noticeable. Some phrases are also repeated, particularly references to the environment and nature. Aim to use accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; a more precise vocabulary range would make your argument easier to understand and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “Although,” “While,” and “because.” This shows an effort to express contrast and cause, but complex structures are often faulty, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “Although… but” uses two contrasting markers where one is needed, and “I believe this a positive trend” is missing a verb. There are also problems with agreement and verb forms in “several tourist company had offered” and “digitalization destroy… and disrupts.” Articles and sentence construction need attention as well. Practise building one accurate complex sentence at a time, checking subject–verb agreement, verb tense, and whether each clause is complete. Clearer sentence control will help your ideas come through.
