Student answer (Band 7.5)

The extent to which eco-tourism and environmental issues have become a pressing concern has sparked considerable debate in contemporary society. While some maintain that more and more people are choosing to be eco-tourists, others strongly argue that as a result of this development the eco-tourism industry is expanding. From my standpoint, I partly agree with this view, as although eco-tourism offers several important advantages, its potential drawbacks should not be overlooked. This essay will critically examine both perspectives before presenting a reasoned conclusion.

Proponents of eco-tourism highlight several compelling benefits. A primary argument is that it can develop environmental awareness in the new generation, thus fostering constructive change in the tourism industry. For instance, when attractive tourist places are introduced with foresight in big cities across the country, they can generate improved outcomes such as economic growth, expanding opportunities for certain groups and addressing obstacles that previously hindered progress. Consequently, many regard this progress as a pragmatic and forward‑looking solution.

On the other hand, eco-tourism is not without significant challenges. A major concern is that, if poorly managed, it may trigger unforeseen complications or place undue strain on the environment. For example, when new parks and museums are introduced in cities without adequate safeguards, they can diminish effectiveness by making more pollution or disproportionately disadvantage the environment overall. Therefore, critics emphasize the necessity of careful regulation to mitigate these risks.

Considering both perspectives, it becomes evident that the issue is multifaceted rather than straightforward. While the advantages of eco-tourism are substantial, the drawbacks warrant equal consideration. In my view, the most sustainable approach lies in striking a balance, maximizing potential benefits while simultaneously minimizing adverse consequences through thoughtful oversight.

In conclusion, although eco-tourism offers undeniable advantages, the possible decline in social benefits raises legitimate concerns that must not be overlooked. Overall, a balanced and well‑regulated strategy appears the most effective, as it enables progress while safeguarding stability and fairness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses the prompt by discussing the positive and negative aspects of eco-tourism. However, the development of ideas is somewhat generic. While you mention 'environmental awareness' and 'economic growth', the examples provided—such as 'attractive tourist places' or 'new parks and museums'—are vague and do not specifically relate to the concept of 'eco-tourism' (which involves low-impact travel to natural areas). To reach a higher band, ensure your examples are more specific to the topic. Your position is clear throughout, and you maintain a consistent stance, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'on the other hand', and 'in my view' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the benefits to the challenges and then to a balanced conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'contemporary society', 'pragmatic', 'forward-looking', and 'multifaceted'. This shows an ability to use less common lexical items. There are occasional instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'making more pollution' (which is slightly informal) or 'diminish effectiveness'. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas with precision and style, and you avoid repetitive language throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Your control over grammar is generally strong, with few errors that impede communication. For example, your use of conditional structures ('if poorly managed, it may trigger...') is accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'making more pollution' instead of 'increasing pollution' or 'causing more pollution'. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is handled well, contributing to the overall clarity of your writing.
