To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Student answer (Band 7.0)
With the advancement in science and technology, travelling has become ever so convenient. The availability and easy access to different means of transportation, like flights, trains, and ships, have massively improved tourism. But with convenience comes responsibility; as tourism increases, so does the rise in waste. Eco-tourism ensures tourists act responsibly and respectfully towards nature.
On the one hand, tourism massively improves the economy of the host country as more tourists bring in more money. Tourism helps promote the beauty and hospitality of the nation. It also generates more employment opportunities for the youth, and hugely improves the hospitality sector. Eco-tourism helps prevent degradation of the environment and encourages tourists to act responsibly. It helps protect the ecosystem and present nature in its raw and natural state. For example, tourists at the Everest base camp are provided with bags to carry their feeces while descending the mountains. It ensures the mountain remains free from human waste and is preserved in its original state.
On the other hand, Eco-tourism may create an unpleasant experience for some tourists as they feel forced and obligated to agree to the terms implied by the concerned authorities. For instance, some tourists, due to a lack of proper awareness, may not comply with the terms, and the fine or penalty implied may create an unpleasant and unexpected experience for them.
To conclude, eco-tourism is a positive trend as it ensures the environment is not harmed, while the tourists enjoy the trip. Proper knowledge and awareness about the things to avoid should be spread among tourists to make the experience pleasant for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the positive and negative aspects of eco-tourism. You clearly state your position in the conclusion that it is a positive trend. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph focuses heavily on the general benefits of tourism rather than specifically on eco-tourism, which limits the depth of your argument. While you provide a relevant example regarding Everest, the counter-argument in the second paragraph is slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point made directly links back to the concept of 'eco-tourism' rather than general tourism, and expand on the implications of your examples to provide a more comprehensive analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the transition between the general benefits of tourism and the specific benefits of eco-tourism in the first body paragraph is slightly abrupt. To improve, ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is smoother by using more sophisticated linking phrases that connect the cause-and-effect relationships more explicitly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'degradation', 'hospitality sector', and 'ecosystem' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'implied' when 'imposed' or 'enforced' would be more accurate in the context of penalties. Additionally, the spelling error 'feeces' (feces) should be avoided. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would elevate the essay to a higher band. Focus on using more precise collocations and academic synonyms to enhance your writing style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and your control of basic grammar is generally good. There are some minor errors, such as 'the rise in waste' (which is slightly awkward) and 'the fine or penalty implied' (which should be 'imposed'). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentence structures could be more varied to demonstrate greater flexibility. You have a good grasp of grammar, but to achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, with greater precision.
