To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Due to the concern for the environment, an increasing number of travelers decide to travel in an environmentally-friendly way. While this switch may make travel less interesting, I believe that it is an overall positive trend.

First and foremost, it must be admitted that economic growth is usually at odds with maintaining a sustainable environment. Traveling in an environmentally-friendly way requires holidaymakers to hold their excitement back, unabling them to experiencing many activities, such as cooking on the top of a mountain or hunting even in designated areas. In addition, air travel has the most responsibility for various environmental issues as it causes a substantial amount of greenhouse gases, namely carbon dioxide, than traveling by cars or public transportation. On the individual level, though, not everyone can accept spending long hours with with less space on road.

Nevertheless, these downsides of eco-tourism can be effortlessly turned into advantages if the general public is willing to perceive the whole process in a new light. For instance, they can spend more quality time with family members enjoying the breathtaking seneries on road, and a sense of fulfillment triggered by the action of being responsible for the environment may bring new experience to travelers. Moreover, this new way of travel can slow down the process of global warming and other problems we are facing, and a better weather pattern and cleaner environment will ultimately benefit humans ourselves.

In conclusion, while eco-tourism industry may have a few negative impacts on holidaymakers' experiences, its advantages are more profound because traveling in a new way and better environment can both directly and indirectly bring happiness to travelers. Thus, I firmly believe that this is a positive trend.

Overall7.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that eco-tourism is a positive trend despite some drawbacks. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic trade-offs and the environmental benefits of reduced carbon emissions. However, the development is somewhat uneven; for instance, the argument regarding 'cooking on the top of a mountain' is a bit specific and lacks broader context. The conclusion effectively summarizes the stance. To reach a higher band, the student should aim to provide more nuanced examples of how eco-tourism impacts local economies or specific environmental preservation efforts, rather than focusing primarily on the personal inconvenience of the traveler.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the topic. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the potential downsides to the broader societal benefits. The referencing is generally accurate, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses terms like 'sustainable environment', 'greenhouse gases', and 'breathtaking seneries' (noting the spelling error 'seneries' for 'scenery'). There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some collocations are slightly awkward, such as 'air travel has the most responsibility for various environmental issues'. The range is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly, but more precise academic vocabulary would elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'unabling them to experiencing' (should be 'unable to experience') and 'with with' (repetition). The sentence 'air travel has the most responsibility... than traveling by cars' contains a comparative error. Despite these slips, the meaning is never obscured, and the student shows a good grasp of complex structures. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help in achieving a higher band.
