IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 9.0)

There has been an ongoing debate about whether the rapid expansion of the eco-tourism industry is beneficial for society and the environment. Although some people argue that eco-tourism may increase travel costs and place pressure on natural destinations, I am strongly of the opinion that it is an overwhelmingly positive trend. This essay will explain why I hold this view.

The first and perhaps the most significant reason is that eco-tourism plays a pivotal role in protecting the natural environment. In other words, it encourages travellers to minimize their environmental impact by reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and respecting local ecosystems. This means that popular tourist destinations are more likely to be preserved for future generations instead of being damaged by mass tourism. A clear illustration of this is the growing number of eco-lodges and wildlife reserves that reinvest tourism revenue into conservation projects and habitat restoration. Therefore, it is evident that eco-tourism not only promotes sustainable travel but also contributes significantly to environmental preservation.

Equally important is the fact that eco-tourism generates substantial economic and social benefits for local communities. Furthermore, it creates employment opportunities in sectors such as hospitality, transportation, wildlife conservation, and tour guiding, enabling local residents to earn a stable income without exploiting natural resources. Owing to this, communities become more motivated to protect forests, beaches, and wildlife, as these natural assets directly support their livelihoods. For example, in many developing countries, local people work as nature guides and operate environmentally friendly accommodation, allowing visitors to experience the region's biodiversity while contributing to the local economy. As a consequence, eco-tourism fosters sustainable economic growth, improves living standards, and strengthens environmental awareness among both residents and tourists.

Admittedly, the rapid growth of eco-tourism may create certain challenges. If it is poorly managed, even environmentally conscious tourism can lead to overcrowding, habitat disturbance, and increased pressure on fragile ecosystems. However, these drawbacks can be effectively mitigated through strict environmental regulations, visitor limits, and responsible tourism policies. Consequently, the potential disadvantages are relatively minor when compared with the long-term environmental and economic benefits.

To conclude, despite a few manageable challenges, I firmly believe that the expansion of eco-tourism is a highly positive development. It not only protects the environment but also supports local economies, raises public awareness about sustainability, and encourages responsible travel. Considering these long-term advantages, the continued growth of eco-tourism should be welcomed and actively promoted.
