IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.
To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.5)
In recent years, environmental awareness has increased significantly, leading many people to choose eco-tourism, which involves travelling in ways that minimize harm to nature. As a result, the eco-tourism industry has grown rapidly. I believe this is a highly positive trend because it helps protect the environment while also benefiting local communities.
One major advantage of eco-tourism is that it encourages the conservation of natural habitats and wildlife. Unlike mass tourism, which often causes pollution, deforestation, and overcrowding, eco-tourism promotes responsible behaviour. Eco-tourists are more likely to use environmentally friendly transport, avoid littering, and respect local ecosystems. In addition, many eco-tourism businesses invest part of their profits in conservation projects, helping to preserve forests, beaches, and endangered species for future generations.
Another important benefit is its positive impact on local economies. Eco-tourism creates employment opportunities for local residents as guides, hotel staff, and artisans. It also encourages tourists to purchase local products and services instead of supporting large international companies. Consequently, communities receive financial benefits while preserving their cultural traditions and natural surroundings. For example, in many national parks, local people earn a sustainable income by guiding visitors and protecting wildlife rather than exploiting natural resources.
However, eco-tourism must be managed carefully. If too many tourists visit environmentally sensitive areas, even responsible tourism can damage ecosystems. Therefore, governments should enforce strict regulations, limit visitor numbers where necessary, and educate travellers about sustainable practices.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that the expansion of eco-tourism is a positive development. It not only protects the environment but also supports local communities and promotes sustainable economic growth. With effective management and responsible behaviour from both tourists and authorities, eco-tourism can play a vital role in preserving the future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with specific benefits of eco-tourism (conservation and economic impact) discussed in separate, logical paragraphs. You also provide a balanced view by acknowledging the need for management, which adds depth to your argument. The conclusion effectively summarises your main points. The response is well-structured and directly answers the 'to what extent' question by arguing that it is a positive trend, provided it is managed correctly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In addition', 'Consequently', and 'However'. The transition between the benefits of eco-tourism and the necessary precautions is smooth. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The referencing is clear, and the flow of the argument is easy to follow throughout the text, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, such as 'environmental awareness', 'natural habitats', 'endangered species', and 'sustainable income'. The word choice is generally precise and natural. There are no significant errors in word formation or collocation. While the vocabulary is effective and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated or less common idiomatic expressions could elevate the response further, but the current range is sufficient for a high score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of relative clauses ('which involves travelling...') and conditional structures ('If too many tourists visit...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no major grammatical slips that impede communication. The use of modal verbs and passive voice is accurate and contributes to the formal tone required for an academic task.
