IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, eco-tourism is is becoming increasingly significant. Although I acknowledge that it is save for the environment, I largely believe that there are more serious factors that pollutes the environment which needs to be considered. This essay will examine the primary reasons why I think it is not a positive trend.

One compelling argument in favor of eco-tourism is that it uses environmentally friendly ways. Ecotourism is a form of tourism that aims to minimize environmental damage while benefiting local people and conserving natural habitats. For example, when people visit a park, there are guided by trained individuals. This means that the tourists will not alter with anything in that environment and consequently conserving the area. Additionally, they pay for the entry fee and other charges. The money paid will be used to support the projects within the area. This means that ecotourism is important.

However, it would be unrealistic to overlook the fact that this alone cannot solve the environmental problems we are facing currently. I believe that there are more serious causes including the fumes from industries and the release of industrial effluents to the water sources. These affects the organisms directly because it can be fatal to aquatic animals if not treated. Additionally, the industrial fumes can pollute the air and consequently leading to diseases.

To conclude, although eco-tourism has clear advantages, I believe that it is not a positive development because there are other factors than can damage the environment largely and needs to be considered.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt but struggles with logical consistency. While you acknowledge the benefits of eco-tourism, your conclusion that it is 'not a positive trend' because other environmental issues exist is a logical fallacy. The prompt asks if eco-tourism is positive; the existence of industrial pollution does not negate the positive impact of sustainable travel. Your position is clear, but the development of ideas is somewhat unbalanced, as you spend significant time discussing industrial pollution, which is only tangentially related to the core topic of eco-tourism. To improve, ensure your arguments directly address the specific trend mentioned rather than comparing it to unrelated environmental threats.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. You use cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'However,' and 'To conclude' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the benefits of eco-tourism and the critique of industrial pollution feels abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the two main body paragraphs could be smoother to better support your overall argument. Overall, the structure is functional and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consequently,' 'minimise environmental damage,' and 'natural habitats.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'alter with anything' (should be 'alter anything') and 'pollutes the environment which needs to be considered' (subject-verb agreement error). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, these errors occasionally limit precision. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations more accurately and expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary related to sustainability.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'eco-tourism is is becoming' (repetition), 'it is save' (should be 'safe'), 'there are guided' (should be 'they are guided'), and 'these affects' (should be 'these affect'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for minor slips in tense and word form.
