Student answer (Band 6.5)

Concern for the environment is expanding significantly, and more and more people are picking to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally friendly techniques. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is growing rapidly. I personally think this is a great chance for the people to be learning new things and exploring new environments.

One major reason why I agree with this is that it can help people care more about the environment. When people visit natural areas and see wildlife and landscapes in person, they can develop a greater appreciation for nature. This may encourage them to behave more responsibly and avoid activities that could damage the environment.

Another major reason why I believe eco-tourism is beneficial is that it provides people with opportunities to learn about different environments and cultures. By visiting natural areas, people can gain knowledge about wildlife, ecosystems and the way local communities live. For example, tourists who visit national parks can learn about the animals and plants that live there. As a result, they may become more knowledgeable and develop a greater appreciation for the natural world.

In conclusion, I believe that the rapid growth of eco-tourism is a positive development for both individuals and the environment. It can encourage people to become more aware of environmental issues and develop a stronger appreciation for nature and wildlife. At the same time, visiting different natural areas gives tourists the opportunity to gain knowledge about unfamiliar environments and cultures. Therefore, I believe that the increasing popularity of eco-tourism can provide valuable educational experiences while encouraging people to behave more responsibly towards the natural world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt effectively by taking a clear position that eco-tourism is a positive trend. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, focusing on environmental awareness and educational benefits. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; both body paragraphs focus on 'learning' and 'appreciation,' which limits the depth of the argument. To reach a higher band, you should explore a broader range of impacts, such as the economic benefits for local communities or the potential negative side effects like 'greenwashing' or the carbon footprint of travel, to provide a more balanced and comprehensive analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is logical, and the paragraphing is appropriate. You use cohesive devices such as 'One major reason,' 'Another major reason,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the transitions are somewhat mechanical and formulaic. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural rather than relying on standard signposting. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the development of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'eco-tourists,' 'wildlife,' and 'ecosystems.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'great chance,' 'major reason'). To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common vocabulary related to environmental issues, such as 'sustainability,' 'conservation,' or 'ecological footprint.' The current word choice is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For instance, 'more and more people are picking to be' is slightly unnatural; 'choosing to become' would be better. You have good control over punctuation and basic grammar. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility. Currently, the sentence patterns are somewhat predictable, which keeps the score in the 6.5-7.0 range.
