IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Concern for the environment is increasing rapidly, and more people are choosing eco-tourism as a way of travelling responsibly. I believe this is a highly positive trend because it can protect nature and provide economic benefits to local communities.

One major advantage of eco-tourism is that it helps protect the natural environment. Eco-tourists are generally encouraged to avoid activities that damage forests, rivers and wildlife. For example, national parks can use money from tourism to protect endangered animals and maintain natural areas. In addition, people who visit these places may become more aware of environmental problems and develop better habits, such as reducing waste and avoiding single-use plastic.

Another important benefit is that eco-tourism can support local people. In many rural areas, tourism provides jobs for local residents, including guides, drivers and hotel workers. Local businesses can also earn money by selling traditional food, handicrafts and other products. This means that communities can benefit financially without depending heavily on activities that may harm the environment. For instance, a village near a national park may earn income by offering guided nature walks to visitors.

However, eco-tourism can have some negative effects if it is not properly managed. A large number of tourists can still produce waste, disturb wildlife and put pressure on natural resources. Therefore, governments and tourism companies should set limits on visitor numbers and make sure that tourism activities follow environmental rules.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that the growth of eco-tourism is a positive trend. Although it can create environmental problems when poorly managed, responsible eco-tourism can protect nature, raise environmental awareness and improve the lives of local communities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, clearly stating your position that eco-tourism is a positive trend. Your ideas are well-developed, with distinct paragraphs focusing on environmental protection and economic benefits. You also provide a balanced view by acknowledging the potential for mismanagement, which adds depth to your argument. The examples, such as national parks using tourism revenue for conservation and the creation of local jobs, are relevant and effectively support your main points. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your analysis by discussing the long-term sustainability of these practices or comparing them to traditional tourism models.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and you use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Another important benefit', and 'Therefore' effectively to link your points. The transition between the benefits and the potential drawbacks is smooth, demonstrating a good grasp of paragraph structure. The flow of information is natural, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. To improve, you could experiment with a wider variety of cohesive devices to avoid relying on standard transition words, which would make the writing feel more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the topic, such as 'environmentally-friendly', 'endangered animals', 'handicrafts', and 'natural resources'. Your word choice is generally precise and contributes to a clear, professional tone. While the vocabulary is accurate, it is somewhat functional. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items that demonstrate a deeper command of the language, such as 'mitigate the impact' instead of 'avoid activities that damage' or 'economic viability' instead of 'earn money'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

Your grammar is strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional structures and modal verbs effectively to express your arguments. The punctuation is accurate, and there are very few grammatical errors throughout the text. The sentences are generally error-free, which makes your writing easy to follow. To push into the higher bands, ensure you use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as inversion or more advanced relative clauses, to showcase your flexibility. Overall, your control over grammar is consistent and reliable.
