IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.
To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, many people are worried for the environment. So, they have decided to commute in eco-friendly ways. In this essay, I will explore the positive and negative sides of this trend. Firstly, I will discuss the merits, and secondly I will analyze the demerits.
To begin with, eco-tourism has a significant effect on the environment in a healthy way. It reduces pollution by lowering the rates of toxic chemicals and gases such as Methane, Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide, which lead to numerous issues and problems, as spreading illnesses, acid rain, animal extinction and global warming. For example, if travellers used transportation methods that relied on clean energy, like electrical vehicles, these bad gases would not be released into the air.
On the other hand, these responsible travelling methods can be very exorbitant. Eco-friendly power such as solar power doesn't provide large amounts of energy. As a result, companies will pay enormous prices for little energy, in comparison to non-renewable sources like oil and fossil fuels, which provide huge quantities of energy while still maintaining their affordable prices. Consequently, humans are forced to use these polluting types without having the financial ability to purchase the harmless cars and motorbikes.
In conclusion, eco-tourists are doing a great job in defending and conserving their ecosystem and they are working for a brighter future for earth, although companies need to quickly find an affordable clean type of energy. In my point of view, I believe that eco-tourism is a postive trend that should be strongly considered by governments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the positive and negative aspects of eco-tourism. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the environmental benefits are clearly stated, the argument regarding the 'demerits' focuses heavily on the cost of energy production rather than the specific impacts of eco-tourism itself. The position is clear, but the link between the high cost of energy and the feasibility of eco-tourism could be more explicitly connected to the travel industry. To reach a higher band, ensure that all arguments directly relate to the specific context of tourism rather than general energy economics.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the benefits and drawbacks. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the first paragraph ('as spreading illnesses') is grammatically awkward, which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There is an attempt to use less common items such as 'exorbitant', 'non-renewable', and 'conserving'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'commute in eco-friendly ways' (commute usually refers to daily travel to work) and 'defending and conserving their ecosystem' (protecting is more natural than defending in this context). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'worried for the environment' (worried about), 'as spreading illnesses' (such as the spread of), and 'a postive trend' (spelling error). While the meaning remains clear, these errors occur with enough frequency to prevent a higher score. The student shows an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over these structures is inconsistent. More attention to preposition usage and sentence-level accuracy would improve the score.
