Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I strongly agree with the concept of eco-tourism. Drawbacks of environmental pollution has led people of all walks of life to go eco-friendly. As a result, the practice of eco-tourism has been emerged.

Mostly, travelers visit the destinations with natural resources. For instance, beach, mountain, hill tracks, waterfalls etc. Their irresponsible activities not only mess up the serenity but also disturb the ecosystem of the respective spot. These can include littering the place, throw away wastes in water bodies, or making noise near the adobes of the wild animals. So, the awareness of tourist can help in this regard. They can use small bags to temporarily store the left-overs and put them in a dustbin later.

Again, wanderers utilize various mode of vehicles while moving from place to place. This increases carbon emission, and eventually, contributes to the global warming. Due to this fact, it is their absolute responsibility to adopt alternative mode of transport that would do less or no contamination. For example, riding cycles instead of motor vehicles.

We all belong to the nature. So, it is definitely our responsibility to retain its authenticity. In this case, green-tourism can play a significant role. Also, it will inspire the people in other sector to take initiative for to save our climate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the positive aspects of eco-tourism, but it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 212 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the arguments remain somewhat superficial. While you clearly state your position, the lack of depth in your examples—such as the brief mention of 'beach, mountain, hill tracks'—prevents a more thorough exploration of the topic. To improve, ensure you expand on your points with more detailed explanations and specific, real-world examples to meet the length requirement and provide a more comprehensive argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the topic. You use some cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Again', and 'So', which help the reader follow your train of thought. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Additionally, the concluding paragraph is quite brief and does not effectively synthesize the main points discussed. Strengthening the logical progression between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'eco-tourism', 'carbon emission', and 'ecosystem', but there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'practice of eco-tourism has been emerged' and 'adobes of the wild animals'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit your score. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary to express your ideas more naturally and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'Drawbacks of environmental pollution has led' (subject-verb agreement), 'practice of eco-tourism has been emerged' (incorrect passive voice), and 'awareness of tourist' (missing article). While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on improving your control over verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles.
