Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In recent time people have became more aware of global warming and are more consious about the choices they make hence the incresing trend in enviroment friendly travels. In my opinion it is a very positive trend.

I beleive nature is beautiful and as individuals its our duty to protect it. Now more then ever people are moving toward enviromentally friendly options like the use of bio-degradeable eqipment and food packeging.

The goverment should also promote this kind of behaviour and provide additional benefits to those who make cosious decesion to protect the enviroment.

We can see due to these awareness in recent years our ozone layer is recovering, in our north and south poles the ice has started to form back and our earth is healing.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 127 words. Consequently, the ideas are significantly underdeveloped. While you state your position clearly, the arguments lack the necessary depth, supporting evidence, and examples required for an academic essay. The task asks for an evaluation of the extent to which eco-tourism is a positive trend, but the response provides only a brief, superficial overview. To improve, you must expand each point with detailed explanations and specific examples to ensure the topic is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into short, simple paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is limited due to the brevity of the text. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences and ideas effectively. For example, the transition between the importance of nature and the role of government is abrupt. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') to create a more logical flow between your arguments and ensure your paragraphing is more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, and there are numerous spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'consious' (conscious), 'incresing' (increasing), 'enviroment' (environment), 'beleive' (believe), 'eqipment' (equipment), and 'decesion' (decision). These errors are frequent and distract the reader. To improve, you need to focus on accurate spelling and attempt to use a more varied range of vocabulary related to the topic of environmentalism and tourism. Avoid using simple, informal phrasing and aim for more precise, academic terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The sentence structures are predominantly simple, with limited attempts at complex sentences. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'people have became' (should be 'have become') and 'due to these awareness' (should be 'due to this awareness'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly regarding commas. To improve, you should practice using a variety of complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency.
