To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Student answer (Band 5.0)
The people nowadays developped more awareness about the importance of preserving the environment. A new tendency seems to spread quite rapidly which is the eco-tourism, it is when people travel with a big sense of responsibility, making the eco-system a priority.
In my opinion, this is largely positive because it can protect nature and encourage people to behave more wisely.
Firstly, eco-travelling can help reduce the negative effects of tourism on the environment. when people chose to stay in eco-friendly places and transportations, they are helping to lower the amounts of pollution. in addition, some eco-projects tend to use a part of their income to protect the nature, for example, some beaches have intrance fees, which can be used to maintain these areas and protect animals.
Secondly, eco-tourism can make tourists more conscious about the environmental issues. When people visit the touristic natural areas, they may understand the importance of preserving these areas.
In conclusion, I mainly believe that the growth of eco-tourism is mainly a positive assessment because it can protect the fauna and flora.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the rise of eco-tourism is a largely positive trend, supporting this with reasons such as reducing negative environmental impacts and raising tourist awareness. However, the response is significantly under-length, containing only 176 words compared to the minimum requirement of 250 words. Because of this severe under-length, the ideas remain underdeveloped and the task is only partially addressed, which heavily impacts the score. To improve, the student must expand their body paragraphs with more detailed explanations, concrete personal examples, and fully developed arguments to meet the word count requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response has an identifiable structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is attempted, though the paragraphs are quite short. There is an effort to use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to sequence ideas. However, the progression is somewhat basic and the overall logical flow is limited by the brevity of the text. Referencing is generally clear, but the mechanical nature of the transitional phrases prevents the response from achieving a higher band. Developing more complex transitional links and expanding the supporting ideas within paragraphs would greatly improve the coherence and overall flow of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully using topic-specific terms like 'preserving the environment', 'eco-tourism', 'eco-friendly', and 'fauna and flora'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'developped more awareness' instead of 'developed greater awareness', 'big sense of responsibility' instead of 'strong sense of responsibility', and 'positive assessment' instead of 'positive development' or 'positive trend'. There are also minor spelling errors like 'intrance' instead of 'entrance'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate simple ideas, but inaccuracies in less common lexical items restrict the score to a band 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of attempted complex structures include relative clauses and conditional-like ideas, such as 'when people chose to stay in eco-friendly places and transportations, they are helping to lower the amounts of pollution'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense issues ('The people nowadays developped'), spelling errors ('developped'), incorrect verb forms ('when people chose' instead of 'choose'), and awkward prepositions or pluralisations ('transportations', 'amounts of pollution'). While these errors do not completely impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the writer from achieving a higher band score.
