IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Global warming is one of the world's biggest ecological concerns.

Earth has gone from having a pleasant, balanced climate to natural disasters occuring all around the world in a very short span of time. Koko, the only chimpanzee who could speak using sign language, warned us as well. He asked us to "Save Earth" and it is high time, humans become a unit to work towards it.

The efforts have started. People are choosing to be "eco-tourists" to help Earth.

This change is a very positive change considering it is us who is responsible for the ecological changes in our environment.

Firstly, eco-tourism being the reason, people have started to make conscious decisions about their travelling and tourism. Acknowledgement and taking responsibility has increased on a very huge scale. People question their choices before their actions and that saves the planet from the irreversible damage. Just how it is said, "Prevention is better than cure".

Secondly, it also helps exhaust the planet lesser and lesser. Humans exhaust the resources that Earth provide them with more and more each passing year. Eco-tourism helps decrease that as well! Less meat consumption and using bicycles instead of motorbikes (that require fossil feul to function), and kayaking in lakes instead of using motor-boats are examples of people trying to use lesser resources of the planet.

Moreover, there is a drastic change in deforestation as well. Since people actively make pro-planet choices, the demand for malls/big luxurious hotels in mountainous areas has reduced. People choose camping over staying in hotels which diverts the builders towards building environmental-friendly options for tourists.

Additionally, there are plenty other benefits of the eco-tourism industry expanding. One of them is the increase in emloyment. There are more and better jobs along with voluntary experiences for the tourists as well. Awareness is also included in the list; people have gotten more and more aware of the environmental concerns through the tourism changes. An example of that is tourists visiting Antartica. There are certain protocols that all the tourists visiting Antartica need to follow; like nobody kneels or touches the snow/ice, nobody touches the penguins, everybody santizes their shoes and wears protective gears every time they get off their ships, and more. Upon returning, they share their experience to let people know the measures that are taken to save whatever is left on our planet.

No matter how little the changes are, every contribution into making our planet a better place is important. The expansion of eco-tourism industry not only has brought active change but has also influenced every tourist around the world to make well-thought decisions about their tourism practices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively addresses the prompt by taking a clear, well-supported position that the expansion of eco-tourism is a positive trend. The writer explores several distinct arguments, including increased personal responsibility, reduced resource exhaustion, lower deforestation rates, and broader economic and educational benefits. Examples such as the regulations in Antarctica provide good support. However, the introduction relies heavily on conversational or somewhat irrelevant framing, mentioning a chimpanzee named Koko, which distracts slightly from formal academic style. Nonetheless, all parts of the task are addressed and ideas are extended, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct body paragraphs addressing different facets of the positive trend, such as resource usage and educational awareness. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to guide the reader, using markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally'. However, some referencing is slightly clunky or repetitive, such as 'eco-tourism being the reason' and repetitive phrasing in transitions. Cohesion is functional and clear overall, fitting comfortably into the Band 7 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common lexical items, such as 'ecological concerns', 'irreversible damage', 'pro-planet choices', and 'voluntary experiences'. There is adequate flexibility to discuss environmental themes, though occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies occur, such as 'exhaust the planet lesser and lesser' instead of 'deplete natural resources to a lesser extent', and the spelling slip 'emloyment'. Despite these minor flaws, communication flows smoothly and the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or participial clauses like 'Since people actively make pro-planet choices, the demand for... has reduced.' There are occasional grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'it is us who is responsible' (should be 'are responsible'), 'fossil feul' (spelling), and 'every contribution into making' (should be 'to making'). However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of sentences are constructed with reasonable control, justifying a Band 6.5.
