IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Environment is expanding more because number of persons are chosing to be 'eco-toursits'. Because they not only focusing on travelling also cares about the environment. However, travelling is responsible for environment friendly methods. Through this number of travellers increased and positive result of eco-toursim is also enhanced. If the environment is safe and clear, then the tourist will definitely go to that places. I think that it is a positive trend, because it support the environment as well as local economy.

Travelling is the best way for increasing exposure. Although, travelling in eco-friendly environment helps to explore more places with the help of tour guides. Thus, travelling also improves the quality life of guiders by getting handsome income from the travellers. They not only explore place also have a great knowledge about plants and animals. Through funding or income, they utilise this money in the protection of plants and animals in national parks.

In addition, when large number of tourists come it is also a drawback for the environment. Because number of vehicles in that place causes pollution. For instance, air pollution is one of them. The smoke comes out from the vehicles also have negative impact on environment. In eco-friendly areas, sprays for making environment clean is also done to influence individuals just to take money from them but did not spray in reality.

I believe that keeping the environment eco-friendly is the first priority. However, through the rise of emission of harmful smoke also make the environment polluted. People go that places to reduces stress and if the same thing happens to that places then they will never go there. Thus, economy also decreased. We have to keep clean our environment by planting more trees, keep it clean, and protect them from harmful chemicals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt regarding whether the rise of eco-tourism is a positive trend, concluding that it is beneficial because it supports the environment and the local economy. The student covers both positive aspects, such as supporting tour guides and wildlife protection, and acknowledges drawbacks like vehicle pollution. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times confusing, as seen in the third paragraph where the argument about cleaning sprays is unclear and tangential. The position is discernible, but reasoning is frequently obscured by awkward expression and under-developed thoughts. Consequently, this performance aligns most closely with Band 5, as it addresses the task only partially with limited and under-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an attempt at structural organisation. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by unclear referencing and a lack of cohesive devices. Transitional phrases are either misused, such as 'However, travelling is responsible...' in the opening paragraph, or absent, making the flow disjointed. Pronoun referencing is also weak; for example, in the second paragraph, 'They not only explore place also have a great knowledge' creates confusion over whether 'they' refers to travellers or guides. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is faulty and mechanical. This reflects Band 5, where there is some organisation but a lack of clear overall progression and inadequate or inaccurate use of cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'environment', 'travelling', 'tourists', and 'places'. There are noticeable word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'number of persons are chosing', 'improves the quality life of guiders', and 'handsome income' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). Spelling errors also occur, such as 'chosing' and 'guiders'. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic meaning, the restricted range and frequent inaccuracies constrain the score. These features are characteristic of Band 5, featuring a limited vocabulary range with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. The majority of sentences are simple or attempt complex structures that are faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar, tense, and article usage. Examples of severe grammatical issues include 'Environment is expanding more because number of persons are chosing...', 'Because they not only focusing on travelling also cares...', and 'We have to keep clean our environment by planting more trees, keep it clean, and protect them...'. Punctuation and subject-verb agreement errors are persistent throughout the text. These persistent structural errors and the lack of error-free complex sentences place the grammar score firmly at Band 4, where errors are frequent and occasionally distort meaning.
