Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt only partially, which is compounded by the fact that the length requirement is not met, as the response is well below the 250-word minimum. The writer attempts to discuss whether eco-tourism is a positive trend, mentioning points like tourism on bicycles and garbage management. However, the position is not always clearly sustained, and the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. For instance, statements about walking barefoot to other countries lack realism and sufficient elaboration to fully support the argument. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met, develop ideas more thoroughly with specific, relevant explanations, and maintain a clearer overall position on the topic throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organization, but there is no clear overall progression from beginning to end. The text is divided into only two short paragraphs, which indicates a lack of sufficient and appropriate paragraphing. Cohesive devices are basic, sometimes inaccurate, or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Today' and 'Also' to start sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making the logical relationship between sentences and ideas sometimes difficult to follow. To achieve a higher band, the essay needs a more logical structure with distinct paragraphs dedicated to specific points, alongside a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to connect ideas smoothly and guide the reader through the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for expressing basic thoughts about the environment, such as 'pollution control', 'air pollution', and 'non renewable sources'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation, such as 'keeping environment in concern', 'causious', 'eco tourist', and 'cleannenvironment', which cause some difficulty for the reader. Spelling errors also occur. To improve to the next band, the writer needs to expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary and idiomatic phrases with greater precision, while paying closer attention to correct word forms, spelling, and collocations in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentence forms and repetitive patterns. When attempts are made at more complex sentences, they are often faulty, featuring frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples of errors include missing articles ('to protect environment'), incorrect prepositions ('in concern'), run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation ('cleannenvironment. which could save us'), and subject-verb or pluralization inconsistencies. These frequent errors cause strain for the reader. To progress, the writer must demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures and exercise much better control over basic grammatical rules, tense consistency, punctuation, and article usage to reduce the frequency of errors.
