IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Eco-tourists generally seek to travel in a responsible, environmentally friendly way. In my point of view, it is a positive trend, as it promotes a healthy and happy environment not only for humans but also for the whole ecosystem, decreasing emissions and the increase in carbon dioxide that is released when driving cars or any transport vehicle that uses fuel in that manner. The Government in our country has launched green line trains and buses that use electricity in order to operate and to help tourists to not only explore the cities but also give them an opportunity to build relationships with the locals while travelling in local transportation provided by the city. The tourists get ample time to explore, observe, and learn about the culture of the city while travelling in eco-friendly transportation without worrying about their car or fuel.

Consequently, having eco-friendly ways not only helps the environment, it also helps to cut fuel expenses while cutting the carbon footprint. Using an airplane rather than using a car can also be one way of cutting down on fuel use, helping to promote a fresh and green environment to excel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response sits at this band because it addresses the task only partially and falls significantly short of the word count requirement, containing only 191 words against the minimum of 250. While you present a clear position that the eco-tourism trend is positive and mention benefits such as a healthy environment and reduced carbon emissions, your ideas are limited and under-developed. For example, your reference to the government launching green line trains and buses introduces a relevant local example, but it lacks sufficient elaboration and connection to the broader global tourism context. To reach a higher level, you must fully develop all parts of the prompt with extended explanations and examples, while ensuring you meet the minimum length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

Your writing shows some basic organization, but lacks a clear overall progression. The response is structured as a single massive block of text, which makes the flow heavy and difficult to follow. There is a lack of sufficient paragraphing to separate distinct ideas, such as separating your general argument from your local transport example. While you attempt to use basic cohesive devices like 'Consequently', referencing and logical progression between sentences remain weak. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, you should divide your essay into clear paragraphs—an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion—and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to the environment such as 'eco-tourists', 'ecosystem', 'carbon footprint', and 'emissions'. You also attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'ample time' and 'fuel expenses'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as saying 'decreasing emissions and the increase in carbon dioxide that is released when driving cars' and stating that using an airplane is a way of cutting down on fuel use, which contradicts general environmental facts. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of sophisticated lexical items with greater precision and avoid odd collocations or factual contradictions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your grammar features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct multi-clause sentences, such as 'The Government in our country has launched green line trains and buses that use electricity in order to operate and to help tourists...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as run-on sentences and minor prepositional inconsistencies, but they rarely impede communication. The majority of your basic structures are controlled, though complex structures occasionally become slightly convoluted. To move up to the next band, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over punctuation and sentence boundaries.
