IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A significant number of people are becoming 'eco-toursits' due to the increasing concerns for the environment. They travel responsibly and use eco-friendly methods. Eco-tourism industry is growing because of this shift. I believe, this is largely a positive move because it will ultimately help protect the climate.

In recent years, there is an ongoing debate about the rising concerns of climate change which affects the environment. Environmental scientists and global tourism organisations are promoting eco-friendly behaviours in order to counter the concerns done to the environment. We are seeing seminars, online discussions, podcasts, and awareness campaigns to educate people about the rising concerns for the environment and potential ways to protect the climate.

As a result, a growing number of people are responding to such measures and they are changing the ways of their travelling and as toursits. As a toursit, they use eco-friendly products, travel to destinations, keeping their responsibilities in mind. For instance, they use bio-degradeable products, avoid plastic bags and littering to keep the surroundings clean and beautiful. All these measures help reduce the negative impacts of irresponsible travelling and ultimately ensure the safety of climate.

Due to the changing habits of tourists and their extensive use of eco-friendly items, the companies which produce such products and promote eco-tourism are rapidly growing.

In conclusion, I believe this shift is remarkable. It will help to preserve the environment and reduce the associated concerns. More and more tourists and global tourism organisations should join the discussions and campaigns promoting eco-friendly ways and products. In this way, we can provide our next generation a safer, more friendly environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that the expansion of eco-tourism is a positive trend. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as the role of awareness campaigns and the benefits of using bio-degradable products. However, some ideas are under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the discussion on how companies are growing as a result of changing tourist habits is quite brief and lacks specific supporting examples. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to expand on these points with deeper elaboration and clearer connections to the main thesis throughout every body paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and logical paragraphing is used throughout. Information is generally ordered chronologically, moving from the definition of the trend to causes and effects. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For example, referencing can be unclear, such as in the sentence 'As a toursit, they use eco-friendly products...', where the shift between singular and plural creates slight confusion. Additionally, cohesive devices like 'As a result' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively, but the flow between some sentences could be smoother to achieve a truly natural progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'bio-degradeable', 'awareness campaigns', and 'preserve the environment'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a limited control of lexical features. For example, 'eco-toursits' and 'toursit' are misspelled multiple times, and phrases like 'concerns done to the environment' show unnatural collocation. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writer from achieving a higher level of lexical precision and stylistic flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response makes use of a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'the companies which produce such products and promote eco-tourism are rapidly growing.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including article misuse and awkward prepositional phrases, such as 'rising concerns of climate change' instead of 'rising concerns about'. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without significant difficulty.
