Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, there has been growing concern towards protecting environment in various ways. One of this is eco-tourism which enables people to travel in a responsible and environmetally-friendly manner. As more and more people are opting for eco-tourism, this industry is explanding and it is largely a positive development.
One of the major reasons for this trend is the increase in the pollution posed by tourism. While the rise in the flow of tourists brings in economic growth to society, it has some detrimental effects on the environment and the local infrastructure. For example, increased tourist load in venice created hurdles with more people travelling through means of water transport, leading to water pollution and some damage to the surrounding infrastructure. This in turn brought in an effective solution called eco-tourism which means, the tourism is promoted in an environmentally-postive way without causing damage to the monuments and buildings and without polluting the nature.
Moreover, the rise in the number of people choosing to be eco-tourists has led to the expansion of eco-tourism industry. This trend brought in a lot of changes in improving the environmental conditions that are beneficial for both the local people and the tourists visiting the place. Furthermore, strict rules have been imposed in certain regions that must be followed by the visitors in conserving the nature. Also new employment opportunities have been created for local people in regulating the conditions of eco-toursim and also made huge improvements to make the local businesses flourish. As a result of eco-tourism, the local area can be well maintained improving the quality of tourism with less congestion.
To conclude, eco-tourism is becoming increasingly poplular with more tourists being concerned with the conservation of the environment leading to the expansion of the eco-tourism industry. From reducing pollution and preserving the local infrastructure to creating employment opportunities and fostering local businesses, it is largely a positive trend.

|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task and maintains a clear position throughout, concluding that the trend is largely positive. Ideas are extended and supported, though there is a slight tendency to over-generalize in parts. For instance, the discussion on Venice offers a specific example of tourist pollution, and the third paragraph successfully outlines the benefits of eco-tourism, such as job creation and stricter conservation rules. However, some ideas, such as the mechanisms of how local businesses flourish, could be slightly more fully developed to reach the highest standard. Overall, the prompt is thoroughly explored and well-reasoned, reflecting a solid upper-intermediate response to the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay presents a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from an introduction to pollution-based rationale, economic and social benefits, and a clear concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, with phrases like 'One of the major reasons', 'Moreover', and 'As a result of eco-tourism' guiding the reader through the argument. While paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, some of the referencing and transitional links feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless, which keeps the response at this level. On the whole, the structure is coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items with some awareness of style, such as 'detrimental effects', 'infrastructure', and 'conservation of the environment'. However, there are some word-choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'environmetally-friendly' (spelling), 'explanding', and 'environmentally-postive'. While these errors do not impede communication, they highlight occasional inaccuracies. The use of phrases like 'brought in an effective solution' also borders on informal or less precise collocations, showing that while the lexical resource is sufficient for basic flexibility, it requires greater precision and control to advance further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'While the rise in the flow of tourists brings in economic growth...' and 'strict rules have been imposed in certain regions that must be followed...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omission ('protecting environment' instead of 'protecting the environment'), subject-verb agreement issues ('One of this is eco-tourism' instead of 'One of these'), and minor punctuation lapses. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and sentence structures are generally controlled. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to demonstrate greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and finer control over articles and determiners.
