Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, some people believe that concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding. I believe this method is mainly a positive development because it helps in maintaining clean and healthy environment and prevent from polluting tourist spots.

Firstly, this view reduces the pollution in the environment by replacing gasoline vehicles with Electric vehicles. Traditional fuel operated vehicles release a huge amount of carbon dioxide which reduces the oxygen level in the environment and becomes a threat for human health. So, if tourists use EV vehicles instead of this kind of vehicles, they help to reduce the pollution in the environment. Secondly, this belief prevents the environment from being polluted by garbage. This is because visitors throw the garbage on streets and on restricted areas instead of throwing them in dustbins. If tourists throw garbage in the designated place instead of throwing in random areas, it helps tourist spots to remain clean.

Additionally, this method promotes the usage of biodegradable products instead of non-biodegradable items. If a visitor uses a paper bag instead of a plastic bag, it helps to maintain the uniqueness of a tourist spot and prevents from littering the environment with non-biodegradable wastes. Furthermore, travelling in eco-friendly ways helps to maintain the beauty of a particular spot. If a person plugs flowers from a place famous for unique flowers, it may lose its uniqueness and reputation of being a tourist place. Therefore, this place will no longer be recognised as a tourist spot.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that it is a positive development because this method helps to maintain the uniqueness of a particular spot and promotes the usage of biodegradable products. In addition, this view reduces the air pollution caused by gasoline vehicles and helps a tourist spot to remain clean.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout that eco-tourism is a positive development. Note that 33 words copied directly from the task prompt were not counted towards the overall length. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as pollution reduction and maintaining environmental beauty, but some of these ideas are under-developed. For example, the point about flowers being plucked from a famous place is a very specific, limited example that is not fully elaborated in terms of broader tourist impact. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to extend and support all main arguments with deeper explanations and more robust examples rather than relying on brief conditional statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different arguments. However, cohesion is at times mechanical and repetitive. The writer relies heavily on simple sequential markers like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore', and some referencing lacks clarity, such as using 'this belief' or 'this view' to refer to actions or situations. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly, ensuring that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow naturally without sounding formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating sufficient range to discuss environmental concerns and eco-tourism. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items, such as 'biodegradable', 'non-biodegradable', and 'uniqueness', but there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'EV vehicles' (redundant since 'EV' stands for electric vehicle) and 'plugs flowers' instead of 'picks flowers'. Spelling and word choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication. To move up, the writer should incorporate a wider selection of less common lexical items with precise control over style and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures like 'If tourists throw garbage...'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with articles ('maintaining clean and healthy environment' missing an article) and prepositions inside grammatical patterns ('prevents from polluting' or 'prevents from littering'). While these errors rarely impede communication, they persist throughout the text. To attain a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures and eliminate frequent minor errors related to article usage and prepositional verb patterns.
