Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in concern for the environment and a large number of population is choosing to be 'eco-tourist', that travels in responsible and environmentally friendly ways. I believe this is a positive development because of global warming due to high level of pollution and to protect renewable energy resources.
One major impact of this development is to protect our valuable energy resources, that includes fossil fuels. This is because the more we use renewable energy resource, the more we face challenges in future, regarding to extinction of our natural resources. For example, shortage of fresh water in future will be a great challenge. Moreover, shifted to electric vehicles from petrol cars is a positive development.
Another important aspect is to create a pollution-less environment. People are great concern with the global warming and taking strategies which is environment friendly. For instance, people are shifted to solar system in term of generation of electricity and storage in lithium battery as a backup at night, that is a great substitute of conventional electricity. This can lead to less consumption of electricity from grid stations. Therefore, this development should be considered positive .
in conclusion, I believe that concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding and this is a positive development because of less pollution derived from electric car as compared to petrol vehicles and protection of natural resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt only partially, which keeps the score at this level. Crucially, the length requirement is not met, as the response contains only 226 words (excluding 33 words copied directly from the prompt), falling short of the 250-word minimum. While the writer attempts to present a position on whether eco-tourism is a positive trend, the ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, the second paragraph mentions protecting valuable energy resources and fresh water, but these points lack clear extension or specific examples related directly to tourism. Furthermore, the final paragraph copies a large portion of the task prompt verbatim instead of synthesising original thoughts. To move up, the writer must ensure the word count exceeds the minimum, develop each supporting point fully with relevant examples, and avoid copying the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response displays some organisation with clear paragraph breaks, but there is no consistent overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes used, but they tend to be mechanical or inaccurate, such as using 'Moreover, shifted to electric vehicles' or 'Therefore, this development should be considered positive' where the logical flow is slightly disjointed. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'this development' which fail to connect smoothly back to the preceding sentence. While the essay is divided into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, the relationship between sentences within paragraphs lacks seamless transitions. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that each sentence leads logically into the next to create a clear, progressive argument throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but the range is limited and constrained by noticeable errors. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'environmentally-friendly', 'lithium battery', and 'conventional electricity', but these are accompanied by frequent word choice and word form errors. Examples include 'large number of population is choosing', 'eco-tourist' (singular instead of plural), 'pollution-less environment' (unnatural collocation), and 'people are shifted' instead of 'people have shifted'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but inappropriate word forms and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their lexical range, mastering word forms (such as nouns and adjectives), and learning standard collocations rather than creating literal compounds.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is limited, relying mostly on simple and basic complex sentence forms. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are notable issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. For example, the writer uses 'that travels' instead of 'who travel', 'regarding to extinction' instead of regarding the extinction, and 'in term of generation' instead of in terms of generating. Articles are also frequently misused or omitted, such as in 'shifted to solar system' instead of 'shifted to a solar system'. Punctuation is basic and sometimes intrusive. To reach a higher band, the writer must demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with improved accuracy, paying closer attention to basic agreement, prepositions, and article usage.
