IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The trend towards ecosystem-friendly tourism is significantly increasing and tourists are coming forward as highly responsible individuals by travelling in environmentally friendly ways. This has resulted in an expansion of eco-tourism industry. I believe this is largely a positive approach with some minor drawbacks.

Environment friendly tourisim is a positive development; it helps in the conservation of nature and attracts more individuals are who want to unwind out of the daily city noise. People these days go to the mountain ranges for cambing taking biodegradable substances with them, plastic being nature's greatest enemy is avoided. Such measures should be promoted by the governments and strict actions should be taken in case of violation. For example, many people these days are travelling to the Antartica. To go there specific protocols are followed. Only one ship with a passenger limit is allowed to visit, all the visitors are given special disinfected clothes and boots so that they do not take any organisms with them that will affect Antartica's ecosystem. People are advised to keep their distance from the wildlife. Special methods are used to collect the waste and they are not disposed off in Antartica. These methods have led to the conservation of the continent, making it one of the very few places on Earth with unharmed ecosystem.

There is one concern even regarding eco-friendly tourism; if more than a certain number of individuals travel to a single place, no matter how much they try, the natural hibitats there are affected. A larger number of tourists will make more noise, disturbing the animal life also, more space would be needed to accomodate all the people and more infrastructure would be needed which could lead to deforestation. Like in Antartica, governments should put a limit on the number of individuals visiting a single place at one time.

In conclusion, tourists should be encouraged to follow environmental friendly ways of travelling, and protect the sanctity of the nature. On the other hand, they should be deterred from harming the natural habitats of other living being.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you consider eco-tourism largely positive while recognising a concern about excessive visitor numbers. The conservation examples—especially the Antarctic visitor protocols—are relevant and give your main argument useful support. This meets the task well, and the specific example shows some of the development expected at a stronger level. However, the benefits are not explored as fully as the risks: the point about escaping city noise is brief, and the essay could explain more directly how responsible tourism benefits ecosystems or local communities. The final paragraph restates your view but does not add much synthesis. Develop each main reason with a clearer explanation of its effects to make the response more consistently thorough.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on benefits, a paragraph on possible harm, and a conclusion. The progression from conservation measures to the risk of overcrowding is easy to follow, and examples are placed alongside the points they support. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “There is one concern even regarding eco-friendly tourism” signals a contrast, but the relationship between responsible travel and the infrastructure it may require could be explained more explicitly. The long sequence of Antarctic details also makes the first body paragraph feel crowded. Use clearer topic sentences and divide or group supporting details so each paragraph develops one central idea more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “conservation,” “biodegradable,” “ecosystem,” “wildlife,” and “deforestation.” These choices help communicate the environmental focus, and some less common terms are attempted. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or repetitive: “ecosystem-friendly tourism” is less natural than “environmentally responsible tourism,” while “sanctity of the nature” and “natural hibitats” weaken precision. There are also spelling errors such as “tourisim,” “Antartica,” and “accomodate.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would improve control. Aim to use precise terms consistently rather than repeating broad phrases such as “environmentally friendly ways.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if more than a certain number of individuals travel to a single place” and a relative clause describing visitors who may affect the ecosystem. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “attracts more individuals are who want,” the clause structure is faulty; “attracts more individuals who want” would be clearer. The sentence beginning “A larger number of tourists will make more noise” also joins several consequences in a way that is difficult to control. Review clause construction, articles, and sentence boundaries, and break long chains of ideas into separate sentences. This would make your complex structures more accurate and easier to read.
