IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Eco-tourism industry is expanding due to the growing concern of people regarding the environment. I believe eco-tourism can play a vital role in preserving the environment.

Eco-tourism is significantly benefical in protecting the natural habitat of wild life. Forests, desserts, oceans and mountains has become famous tourist spots these days. People frequently visit them to explore the wonders of nature and sometimes ruin the natural habitat of the wild life by interfering with nature . For example, when people visit forests, they litter the entire place, leave empty cans, broken glass bottles and even used drugs, which directly effect the animals. Sometimes animals get injuried due the broken glass left or eat litter and get sick. There have been cases where people visit forests or beaches and throw cans, wrappers and other stuff in nearby water body, which impacts the health of aquatic life.

Moreover, travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways can raise awareness and encourage other people to be eco-friendly. Nowadays, people are more likely to follow a trend they see on internet, despite their contradicting views. If people see influencers and growing number of people choosing eco-tourism, it will likely push them to think, research and even adapt to eco-friendly habbits. For instance, if a popular influencer posts about choosing to be a eco-tourists, it will likely influence his or her audience to search about it and some might even become eco-tourists themselves.

In conclusion, the expansion of eco-tourism industry is a positive trend. It helps people to discover and experince the wonders of nature without disrupting it. It is also a useful way to raise awareness about environmental problems and to encourage people to fulfill their duty as an individual to perserve nature for the coming generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider the growth of eco-tourism positive, and the conclusion restates this view. Both supporting points are relevant: responsible travel can reduce harm to wildlife, and visible eco-friendly choices may raise public awareness. The examples of litter and broken glass make the first point concrete. However, the discussion is uneven: the second paragraph mainly speculates about influencers and trends, and would be stronger with a clearer explanation of how eco-tourism itself benefits conservation or local communities. The claim that visitors can explore nature “without disrupting it” also needs qualification, since tourism can still have environmental impacts. More developed reasoning and a more specific example would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to two supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphs are focused on distinct reasons, and signposts such as “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The first body paragraph also progresses logically from visiting natural areas to littering and harm to wildlife. Some connections are less precise: the shift from environmental awareness to people following internet trends is asserted rather than fully explained, and “it” in “it will likely push them” could refer to the trend or the act of seeing it. The conclusion repeats the main ideas but does not add much synthesis. Clarifying references and linking each example explicitly to the central claim would make the progression more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “natural habitat,” “aquatic life,” “environmentally-friendly,” and “raise awareness,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There is also some attempt to use more specific language, such as “interfering with nature.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “benefical,” “desserts” (for deserts), “injuried,” “experince,” and “perserve” are misspelled, while “adapt to eco-friendly habits” is not the natural collocation here. Some wording is vague or repetitive, such as “other stuff” and repeated references to people and nature. Aim to check spelling carefully and choose more precise expressions for environmental impacts and behaviour.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “when,” “which,” and “if,” and the overall meaning remains clear. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “If people see influencers … it will likely push them to think, research…” However, there are several errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “Forests, desserts, oceans and mountains has become” should use a plural verb, and “a eco-tourists” has an article and number mismatch. In “Sometimes animals get injuried due the broken glass left,” the preposition pattern is incomplete; use “due to.” Punctuation spacing is also inconsistent, including the space before the full stop after “nature.” Review agreement, articles, and preposition patterns while retaining your complex sentence attempts.
