IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.
To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
These days, people focus more on conservation and betterment of environment as compared with people in past who merely focused on their amusement. Although, it is widely argued that enjoying and making fun while travelling is of major focus rather than protecting and being conscious about the surrondings, but I strongly believe that amusement is a vital thing but safety and conservation of environment is also crucial.
One of the key reason that I believe it is a positive contributing trend is, when individuals travel to their fun destinations, they often ignore and neglect their basic responsibility as humans to save, clean and protect the environment where they are. For instance, during summer most of the individuals travel towards cold places, where they throw garbbage, use vehicles which are not environmental friendly, and they pollute and disrupt their surroundings, as well as the natural habitat destruction of animals residing there.
Secondly, if people start to learn their roles in protection of environment, safety of the surrounding species, forests, or any natural places, it will be much worh it. The endangered species like many of the tigers, deers, birds are becoming extinct due to the destruction of their natural environment and habitat. So, when we learn and implement the vital roles of protection, every disaster can be prevented.
Overall, in the past times, people have widely ignored the environment protection and sutainability laws, but now the trend is rising exponentially, towards protecting the environment. So, I widely agree this practice should be promoted more by the officials, to raise awareness through multiple compaigns.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is broadly clear: you consider eco-tourism positive because it can encourage people to protect natural places and wildlife, and you conclude that officials should promote it. The examples of litter, polluting vehicles and habitat loss are relevant to the topic. However, the response only partly develops the question of whether the industry’s expansion is positive. Much of the first body paragraph describes harmful conventional tourism, while the benefits and practical effects of eco-tourism are asserted rather than explained. For example, “every disaster can be prevented” is an overly broad claim and is not supported. Develop each main point with a specific explanation or example, and make the distinction between eco-tourism and tourism generally clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a concluding opinion. “One of the key reason” and “Secondly” signal the main points, while “Overall” introduces the conclusion. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first body paragraph moves from travel destinations to litter, vehicles and habitat destruction without explaining how eco-tourism addresses these problems. The opening sentence also introduces a contrast about amusement that is not carried through consistently. Some linking is mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the general idea of environmental protection rather than drawing together the specific arguments. Organise each paragraph around one clear claim, then explain and illustrate it before moving to the next point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “conservation,” “environmentally friendly,” “endangered species,” “natural habitat” and “sustainability.” These choices show an attempt to discuss the subject beyond basic everyday language. However, the range and control are uneven, and several inaccurate or awkward expressions make the argument less precise: “betterment of environment,” “fun destinations,” “vital roles of protection” and “widely agree this practice” are not natural collocations. Spelling errors such as “surrondings,” “garbbage,” “sutainability” and “compaigns” are also noticeable. Aim for precise phrases such as “environmental conservation,” “tourist destinations” and “strongly support this practice,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if people start to learn their roles … it will be much worh it” and a relative clause in “animals residing there.” However, complex sentences are often not controlled accurately. The opening uses “Although” and “but” together, creating faulty sentence structure, and “One of the key reason … is, when…” has problems with agreement and clause construction. Other examples include “people in past,” “the endangered species … are becoming extinct,” and “I widely agree this practice,” where articles, number or sentence patterns need attention. Punctuation around introductory clauses is also inconsistent. Practise building clear sentences with one main clause and a correctly connected supporting clause, then proofread agreement and articles.
