IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The eco-tourism industry is expanding due to increasing concern for the environment where people are choosing to be eco-tourists. I think if this trend is implemented for longer period this would be beneficial to the environment.

Around the world people like to travel to many countries whether it be to a country to ther side of the world or it be a neighbouring country. To travel we have to use a trasport either by road or by air. All transport vehicles produce harmful gases which ultimately is harming the environment. Experts have always suggested to find an alternative to reduce the pollution. However, people are now trying to use eco-friendly vehicles for their everyday life. To travel finding environmentally friendly ways is still dificult, as it is not getting enough attention globally. If eco-tourism becomes a major industry in future, it will obviously be helpful for invironment. For example - people are using eco-friendly aeroplanes to travel which is a big step toward reducing environment pollution. Having cars that purifies harmful gases before emitting them in the environment is also helpful.

However, every good thing has it's drawback. To build eco-friendly transport more money is spent on air purifier machines. So it would increase cost of tourism all together in the future, which would be a problem for the people with lower budgets to travel. The eco-tourism industry will be a great step towards saving the environment but in the long run it would fail if the eco-friendly transports are not made affordable.

To conclude, I think the eco-tourism industry will be a positive change in the future working to keep the environment polluton free.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you consider the growth of eco-tourism positive, while recognising that higher costs could limit access. The discussion of transport emissions is relevant, and the examples of cleaner aircraft and cars that filter emissions help illustrate the potential benefits. You also address a drawback and explain that affordability matters for the trend to succeed. However, some points are asserted rather than developed: for instance, the claim that eco-tourism will “obviously be helpful” would be stronger with an explanation of how widespread adoption would reduce overall environmental harm. The cost concern is relevant but could be explored further, and the response focuses mainly on transport rather than other aspects of responsible tourism.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the main paragraphs present benefits and a drawback, and the conclusion restates your position. Ideas generally progress logically, particularly from transport emissions to possible cleaner alternatives. You also use linking expressions such as “However” and “To conclude” to signal shifts. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some stronger control, but cohesion is not consistently smooth. The first body paragraph moves from general travel habits to transport, then to everyday vehicles and aircraft, so the relationship between examples could be made more explicit. The repeated use of “environment” and “eco-friendly” also makes connections feel less varied. Use clearer referencing and more precise transitions between claims and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “eco-tourism,” “harmful gases,” “pollution,” and “affordable.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which makes some sentences less natural. For example, “a transport” is not the usual expression here, “environment pollution” is awkward, and “keep the environment pollution free” is not idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “trasport,” “dificult,” “invironment,” and “polluton” are noticeable. Aim to learn accurate phrases as units, such as “means of transport” and “reduce air pollution,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish environmental benefits from the costs of implementing cleaner technology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “If eco-tourism becomes a major industry in future, it will…” and a contrast introduced by “However.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “if this trend is implemented for longer period” needs an article and a more suitable construction, while “cars that purifies” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “every good thing has it's drawback,” the possessive form is incorrect, and “which is a problem for the people with lower budgets to travel” has an awkward grammatical relationship between the clauses. Review articles, agreement, possessives, and clause construction, then proofread complex sentences to ensure each part connects clearly.
