IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.
To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
Eco-tourism is a new form of tourism in which travelling is more responsible than before means taking care of the environment while travelling. Keeping an open eye on the dust and trash. I had a experience when I was at the sea in Karachi. I was at clifton area and I saw a lot of trash, garbage, waste plastics and cans etc. It was really a horrible experience and I was very angry to see this. Becuase, when I was in the Dubai for my international tour with my IT company, I visited the sea area and it was very different from what I saw at Karachi. In my opinion, responsible travelling is more important that anything, any place you visit or see you should make it your habit to not make the place like a trash bin. You should have a bag or something to add all the trash and wastages there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You express a relevant view that responsible travel matters, and the contrast between Clifton Beach and Dubai gives a personal example connected to environmental cleanliness. However, the response only partially addresses whether the expansion of the eco-tourism industry is a positive trend: it focuses mainly on litter and individual behaviour, without explaining wider benefits or possible drawbacks of industry growth. The position is present but not developed into a clear, sustained argument, and the example is not fully explained. The response also contains 153 words, below the required 250, so there is not enough space to develop reasons and support them. To strengthen the response, state your extent clearly and add developed points about effects on habitats, local communities, or conservation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The ideas are broadly related, moving from a definition of eco-tourism to a personal experience and then to your opinion. The comparison between Karachi and Dubai helps the reader understand why cleanliness matters. However, the response is presented as one paragraph, and the progression from defining eco-tourism to describing litter is abrupt; “Keeping an open eye on the dust and trash” is also left as a fragment rather than linked to a complete idea. The repeated references to trash and waste do not build a clear sequence of reasons. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting arguments, and conclusion, and connect each example explicitly to the question of whether industry growth is positive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “environment,” “responsible,” “garbage,” and “waste plastics,” and the reader can understand the main point. There is some variety in how you describe litter, but several choices are repetitive or imprecise: “trash, garbage, waste plastics and cans” lists overlapping terms, while “add all the trash” is not a natural collocation. “Keeping an open eye” is also an inaccurate expression for paying attention. Spelling slips such as “Becuase” are noticeable. Aim for more precise environmental vocabulary and natural collocations, such as “litter,” “plastic waste,” “dispose of rubbish properly,” and “protect coastal ecosystems.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate several simple ideas clearly, and you attempt to connect them with clauses, as in “when I was in the Dubai … I visited the sea area.” However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and some attempts are faulty or incomplete. “Eco-tourism is a new form of tourism in which travelling is more responsible than before means…” combines structures without a clear grammatical link, while “Keeping an open eye on the dust and trash” is a sentence fragment. There are also errors with articles and sentence construction, including “I had a experience” and “I was at clifton area.” Practise building complete sentences and combining ideas with accurate subordinate clauses; check articles and punctuation when editing.
