IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays people prefer to visit natural places rather than cities with tall sky-scrapers. But huge surge in number of tourists has raised a question mark that whether it is a positive trend or not? From my perspective, it is a positive change that now people are choosing nature over other factors.

Firstly people are getting bored of their same routine in big cities that's why they move to natural places to spend their leisure time. Biggest advantage is that they are loving nature again, they have started to see it's natural beauty and peacefull environment.

Secondly, now people will choose countries like Nepal, Maldives and Pakistan to visit natural places rather than going to countries like UAE or UK. This change will help other countries to grow economically. Another thing is that these tourists take care of such natural places thats why there is no way of causing damage to natural place. When more and more people will visit natural places which are usually small villages like in Kashmir, it will help to provide jobs in local areas.

Once I visited a small village in village near Murree famouse tourist attraction in Pakistan, people there behaved so well that I felt like I was sitting at my home or I was in my own local area. That hospitality is the major reason why people choose to visit such places.

Ultimately, I think that it is a major trend and also a positive trend in this contemporary world which is helping people provide some peace. That's why now small countris are being recogonized and also visited by foreign tourists.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you consider the growth of eco-tourism positive, and you give relevant reasons, including renewed appreciation of nature, economic benefits for smaller countries, and jobs in local communities. The Murree village visit adds a personal example that supports your point about hospitality. However, the response does not fully address the specifically responsible and environmentally friendly aspect of eco-tourism. The claim that tourists “take care” of natural places and therefore cannot cause damage is asserted rather than explained, and the discussion focuses more on visiting natural destinations than on responsible travel. Develop this point with a concrete example, such as limiting waste or supporting conservation, and explain any possible environmental drawbacks before reaching your conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, two reason-focused paragraphs, a personal example, and a conclusion. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Ultimately” help readers follow the main stages. However, some connections are mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is not always clear. For example, the claim that tourists will choose Nepal, Maldives, and Pakistan instead of the UAE or UK needs a clearer link to eco-tourism, while the Murree anecdote appears as a separate paragraph without explicitly connecting its hospitality to the earlier point about local economic benefits. Group related ideas together and use referencing or linking phrases to show how each example supports your argument. This would make the progression more consistently logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “natural places,” “economically,” “local areas,” and “foreign tourists.” There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “peaceful environment” and “major trend.” However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive: “raised a question mark that whether” is awkward, “loving nature again” is informal, and “provide some peace” does not express your meaning naturally. Spelling errors such as “famouse,” “countris,” and “recogonized” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise expressions related to responsible travel and conservation, and check spelling carefully. A broader, more natural range would help you express the argument with greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “that” and “when,” and your meaning is generally understandable. Some sentence structures are controlled, such as “When more and more people will visit natural places … it will help to provide jobs,” although the tense pattern needs adjustment. Other errors include missing articles in “Biggest advantage,” the construction “a question mark that whether,” and the sentence “people there behaved so well that I felt like I was sitting at my home or I was in my own local area,” where the parallel structure is awkward. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly around introductory phrases and long sentences. Practise accurate clause construction, articles, and verb forms, while varying sentence patterns; this will improve control without sacrificing complexity.
