IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

People are increasingly worried about protecting the natural world. And individuals are more concerned about traveling in an environmentally sustainable manner. In this way, the eco tourists are rapidly becoming more in numbers.

I would argue that the eco-tourism contributes to the environmental protection. This will beneficial for the ecosystem and as well as for the economy’s and have the substantial impact on the local communities. For instance, if the individuals travel without causing any harm to the environment or without disrupting any tress from the nature’s. Which will lead to exacerbate the eco system. Furthermore, damaging nature can significantly affect the economy. For example, if people doesn’t care about nature’s properties the tourism will automatically decline and this will eventually affect the economy of the country.

In contrast, eco- friendly tourism will have a huge influence on the country. This will also help to attract more foreign visitors and significantly increase tourism. Likely, if government officials should take action against the people who destroy the nature in our country and look after or protect the natural inhabitants of our beautiful land. I would definitely say that our country will become less polluted and more worth living.

In conclusion, I would totally support this trend because this will make our country more prosperous and help us to grow our economy better. If every individual give a little contribution towards eco- friendly tourism then I must say future will be more worth than the present.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You take a clear position in favour of eco-tourism, and the response stays focused on environmental protection, tourism and economic benefits. The examples about avoiding damage to nature and attracting foreign visitors are relevant. However, the ideas are only partly developed: the first example is difficult to follow, and the claim that eco-tourism will increase tourism is asserted rather than explained or illustrated. The discussion also shifts to government action without showing clearly how this supports your main argument. The response is six words below the required minimum, so it does not meet the task’s length requirement. Develop each main point with a clear explanation or specific example, and ensure the response reaches the required length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the contrast marker “In contrast” signals a change in focus. However, the progression between ideas is not always clear. For example, “Which will lead to exacerbate the eco system” is disconnected from the preceding sentence, while “Likely” does not clearly show how the government’s role follows from the point about foreign visitors. Repeated use of “This will” and “For example” also makes linking somewhat mechanical. Improve the flow by making each paragraph develop one central point, connecting examples explicitly to that point, and avoiding sentence fragments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “environmentally sustainable,” “eco-tourism,” “ecosystem,” “foreign visitors” and “polluted,” so the reader can understand the subject and your general position. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “significantly affect the economy.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive: “eco tourists are rapidly becoming more in numbers,” “disrupting any tress from the nature’s,” and “more worth living” do not express the intended ideas naturally. “Nature” and “economy” are repeated frequently, and “eco-friendly” is inconsistently written. Build a wider set of accurate phrases for conservation, local livelihoods and responsible travel, and check spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including conditional sentences such as “if people doesn’t care about nature’s properties” and a clause beginning “if government officials should take action.” However, complex attempts are often faulty, and several sentences are incomplete or difficult to parse. “Which will lead to exacerbate the eco system” is a fragment, while “This will beneficial” is missing a verb form. There are also recurring agreement and form errors, as in “people doesn’t” and “every individual give,” as well as problems with articles and possessives. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. Practise complete sentence patterns, subject–verb agreement and conditional structures, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb.
