IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It has been seen that significant number of people have decided to be eco-tourists in all over the world. This fashion has been expanding eco-tourism. However, some people are still unsure if it is a positive trend. I strongly believe this trend will contribute to a positive outcome.

Firstly, the problems facing the whole world arise specially from human errors, such as global warming, deforestation, and pollutions. Therefore, through the years, we have been making a ton of efforts to solve these issues which is helpful for both nature and humans. For example, in these days, people here in Mongolia seem to be more responsible about the waste, which is made while travelling, and start to encourage other countries to execute the same process. Moreover, eco-tourism industries provide services that related to the current need around world in order to make profit from it.

Secondly, for developing countries like Mongolia where tourism have not become the one of the core things in its economy, other nations will suggest a number of ways to keep nature pristine since their residents have already started to worry for the environment and learned to be eco-friendly. As a result, this action will benefit a brighter future. For example, we will not have to pay attention to environmental troubles as they will be reduced by this activity.

In conclusion, these contributions from the public will undoubtedly yield positive result. We need to continue with this view, while supporting each other as much as we can.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you strongly believe the growth of eco-tourism is positive, and you give relevant reasons involving waste reduction and environmental awareness. The Mongolia examples also help connect the discussion to a specific context. However, the task asks for an evaluation of how positive the trend is, and the benefits are asserted more than explained. For instance, the claim that eco-tourism will reduce environmental troubles is not supported with a clear mechanism or concrete outcome, while the point about industries making profit is not linked clearly to environmental benefits. Develop each main reason with a specific example and explain its impact; also acknowledge a possible limitation before reaffirming your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly”, and a conclusion. This makes the overall line of argument easy to follow. Some connections, however, are mechanical or unclear. The shift from global environmental problems to the example of waste in Mongolia is understandable, but the link between that example and other countries “execut[ing] the same process” needs explanation. Similarly, the second paragraph moves from developing-country tourism to advice from other nations without showing how this would happen. The conclusion repeats the positive position rather than drawing together the reasons. Use clearer links between claims and examples, and make each paragraph develop one connected point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “eco-tourists”, “deforestation”, “pristine” and “environmentally-friendly”, and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some attempt to use less common language, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “a ton of efforts” is too informal for this essay, “pollutions” is not the usual form in this context, and “the current need around world” is unclear. “This fashion” also does not convey the intended meaning as naturally as “trend”. Aim for accurate collocations and formal phrasing, and check whether a noun is countable before making it plural. More precise vocabulary would help express the environmental and economic effects of eco-tourism.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, using structures such as “Therefore, through the years…” and “since their residents have already started…”. The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction recur. Examples include “significant number of people” (missing an article), “tourism have not become” (subject–verb agreement), and “services that related” (missing a verb). The sentence beginning “For example, we will not have to pay attention…” is also difficult to interpret because its clause relationship is not clearly expressed. Review agreement and article use, and build complex sentences around a clear main clause. Greater control of these patterns would make your reasoning easier to follow.
