IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people are preferring to be eco-tourists due the rapid growing concern for the environment. Eco-toursists are the people who travel in more responsible and environment friendly manner. This leads to expanding of the eco-tourism industry over the period. I strongly believe that it is a postitive trend because it reduces the emission of carbon dioxide and also helps preserve natural resources for the future.

The major advantage of expanding eco-tourism is that less carbon dioxide will be emitted, which is one the green house gases that leads to global warming. Many transportation vehicles such as aeroplanes emit the highest amount of CO2 into the environment, which increases the temperature and leads to melting of glaciers. Reduced use of travelling through such vehicles can lead to less emission of toxic gases into the nature. For example, several eco-tourists travel by train to shorter distance, despite having the facility of aeroplanes. As a result, the amount of toxic gases released into the atmosphere reduces significantly.

Another advantage of growing number of eco-tourists is that it helps preserve the fossil fuels, which are depleting natural resources as they are non-renewable. The shortage of fossil fuels has been noticed since past few years, and saving it for the future is a responsibilty of every human being. Several eco-tourists travel in environment-friendly ways by using electric vehicles. For example, many people are switching from diesel and petrol cars to electric cars as they feel concerned for the environment. This results in less use of natural resources.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that people choosing to be eco-tourists is a positive development as it reduced the emission of toxic gases and help protect the natural resources.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly support the growth of eco-tourism, and the conclusion restates this view. You address the question with two relevant reasons—lower emissions and conserving resources—and support them with examples such as choosing trains over planes and switching to electric cars. This gives the response a solid, relevant foundation. However, the discussion is not equally developed: the transport example explains how emissions might fall, while the fossil-fuel paragraph largely repeats the idea of using fewer resources and could explain more precisely how eco-tourism achieves this. To strengthen the response, develop the consequences and limitations of each reason, and ensure examples directly demonstrate the benefits of eco-tourism.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Each body paragraph has a recognisable central point, and signposts such as “Another advantage” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The progression is generally logical, but cohesion is sometimes mechanical because the paragraphs rely on repeated patterns such as “For example” and “As a result.” Some links between claims and explanations could also be clearer; for instance, the move from choosing electric cars to preserving fossil fuels needs a more explicit explanation of how this relates specifically to eco-tourism. Use a wider range of linking and referencing, and connect each example more directly to its paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “eco-tourists,” “greenhouse gases,” “global warming,” “non-renewable,” and “natural resources.” These choices make the subject clear, and the meaning remains understandable throughout. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward word choices and collocations, such as “expanding of the eco-tourism industry,” “travel in environment-friendly ways,” and “to shorter distance.” Spelling errors also occur in “Eco-toursists,” “postitive,” and “responsibilty.” Aim for more natural phrasing and check spelling carefully; for example, use “growth of the eco-tourism industry,” “travel in an environmentally friendly way,” and “over short distances.” Greater precision would make the argument sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses (“which is one the green house gases that leads to global warming”) and conditional-style explanations (“Reduced use … can lead to less emission”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the errors do not generally prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however: “Many people are preferring” is an awkward tense choice for a general trend, “due the” is missing a preposition, and “it reduced … and help protect” has inconsistent verb forms in the conclusion. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “one the green house gases” and “to shorter distance.” Review verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
