IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I find the trend of eco-tourism really beneficial, would like to encourage it.We live in our environment and interact with it only daily basis, and this a two way process we influence our environment and it respond in an appropriate way.For instance if we disturb the natural balance of the composition of atomspheric gasses it shows us really drastic effects. For example the rise in CFCs has lead to ozone depletion. In return ozone depletion allows ultraviolet radiation to reach earth and cause skin cancers.

Given that we know abouth the two way influence of human-environmet interaction now we take the problem of eco-friendly tourism. The broad prospective of this philosphy is to promote the kind of tourism which does not cause harm to ecosystem. In past few decades we have seen a massive growth of tourism.Although, it seemed to be very encouraging at first, yet the dark side was shown quickkly.

Growth in tourism lead to the problem of disturbing the ecosystem on various fronts.Particularly, land and water pollution. For example in India and Pakistan , we have seen an unctronlled land polution. How does this happen? It happens mainly due to the activity of throwing away of plastic items , which include bottels and bags. Now , this is a problem which can be handled by creating awareness and proper waste management. But there are other systematic issues which we cant solve just by creating more awareness and by merely managing wastes.

The issues which are being highlighted are clearing the lands , building roads by cutting the mountains or making new tourist attraction at places which are supposed to be the part of wildlife. So , if I were to take this problem , I would certainly say that these activities have left very unpleasant effects on our surrondings.

Clearing the forests is associated with the decrease in Oxygen , a gas which is literally our life. We can't live withgout a proper percentage of oxygen present in our atompshere. Moreover , deforestation , is causing the Carbondioxide level to rise which can lead to acid rain.Beside those hazards , we are depriving wildlife of its natural habitat.Furthermore , roads which are built on the mountains are the leading cause of landslidng.A good example is Pakistan, where rwe have witnessed worst landslidings devastating whole towns.

In conclusion , I see the eco-tourism industry really helpful given that we are facing so much problems because of unwise and ill-informed decsions about tourism .It is thought that by making better choices we can overcome the enviromental challenges we are facing now , to the great extent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear in the opening and conclusion: you consider eco-tourism beneficial and support more responsible choices. You also provide relevant environmental examples, including plastic waste, habitat loss and mountain roads contributing to landslides. However, the response only partly answers the specific question about whether the expansion of the eco-tourism industry is a positive trend. Much of the essay describes the harms of conventional tourism and environmental damage, while the benefits and defining practices of eco-tourism receive little explanation. The opening discussion of ozone depletion is also only loosely connected to tourism. To strengthen the response, explain how eco-tourism can reduce these harms and give a concrete example of its benefits, while developing a more balanced, directly focused argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to environmental problems, examples and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally group related material, and signposts such as “For example,” “Moreover” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. However, progression is not always clear: the opening moves from human interaction with the environment to ozone depletion before the tourism issue is established, and the essay then focuses mainly on the damage caused by tourism rather than returning consistently to eco-tourism. Some linking phrases are repetitive or awkward, and references such as “these activities” require readers to infer exactly which actions are meant. Build a clearer sequence around your position, reasons and examples, and use transitions and references that make the relationship between each point explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “ecosystem,” “deforestation,” “natural habitat” and “ultraviolet radiation,” which helps communicate the environmental theme. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “systematic issues” and “environmental challenges.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are frequent enough to make the writing less fluent, for example “atompshere,” “surrondings,” “unc tr onlled” and “landslidings.” Some collocations are unnatural or imprecise, including “the broad prospective of this philosophy” and “the problem of disturbing the ecosystem.” Choose more conventional combinations and proofread carefully. More precise vocabulary for eco-tourism itself—such as conservation, low-impact travel and local communities—would also help address the topic directly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional and relative structures, as in “if we disturb the natural balance…” and “places which are supposed to be the part of wildlife.” This shows an effort to vary sentence forms. However, errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include missing or incorrect verb forms in “this a two way process” and “it respond,” and faulty sentence boundaries in “I find the trend of eco-tourism really beneficial, would like to encourage it.” Articles, agreement and punctuation also need attention, as in “the decrease in Oxygen” and the inconsistent spacing around commas. Practise checking each sentence for a complete subject and verb, correct agreement, and clear punctuation; shorter, accurate sentences can support your more complex attempts.
