IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Degrading conditions of environment has prompted governments across the world to research and implement measures focusing to alleviate the issues across all the industries including tourism. I completely agree with the idea of eco-tourists opting for responsible and eco-friendly ways of tourism.

Tourism as an industry is not inherently adverse to environment, as travelling does not cause damage to the environment or natural habitats. However, the factors associated with it result in corresponding damage. For instance, a major factor involved is transportation. People travelling from one place to another require a mode of transport which often include flights, trains, or other road vehicles. The respective mode results in contribution of global carbon emissions. However this can be transformed into more environment friendly travelling by replacing carbon powered vehicles to electric based vehicles.

Apart from the transportation factor, other major part for damage in environement includes the transformation of natural habitats into human made resorts and places for recreational activites purely for business profits. This damages the environment and local ecosystem more than it seems. For instance, at a famous beach construction of fancy resorts leads to damage of aquatic life which in turn affects the linked natural cycle.

Choosing to become eco-tourists means to avoid the damage to natural places. Choosing to spend the time purely as the place remains instead of converting it as per own needs. Taking and following proper measures helps to ameliorate the environment providing a great boost in eco-tourism industry. Thus to conclude I completely agree with it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you completely support the growth of eco-tourism. You address relevant environmental effects, including transport emissions and the conversion of natural habitats into resorts, and the beach example helps illustrate the latter. This meets the task well, but the discussion is unevenly developed. The transport paragraph explains the problem and proposes electric vehicles, while the final paragraph mostly restates the benefits without showing in detail how responsible tourism avoids harm or benefits local communities. To strengthen the response, explain the practical meaning of eco-tourism and develop one or two examples further, while also acknowledging any limitations before reaffirming your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs on sources of environmental damage, and a concluding statement. The progression from transport to resort construction is logical, and signposts such as “For instance,” “Apart from,” and “Thus to conclude” help readers follow the argument. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the final paragraph repeats the idea of avoiding damage rather than extending the discussion. The reference in “This damages the environment” is understandable but broad, and the shift from describing harmful tourism to explaining what eco-tourists do could be smoother. Use more varied links that show cause and contrast, and make each paragraph’s central point and its connection to your position explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “natural habitats,” “carbon emissions,” “local ecosystem,” and “recreational activities.” There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “ameliorate” and “inherently adverse.” However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “Degrading conditions of environment,” “focusing to alleviate,” and “carbon powered vehicles” do not express the ideas idiomatically. Spelling errors such as “environement” and “activites” also reduce control. Aim for accurate collocations and natural phrasing rather than choosing formal words that do not fit the context. For example, describe environmental conditions as “deteriorating” and say that measures “aim to reduce” environmental harm.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including a relative clause in “which in turn affects the linked natural cycle” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “conditions of environment has prompted” has a number-agreement problem and needs an article or possessive, while “which often include flights” does not agree with the singular subject “a mode.” The fragments “Choosing to become eco-tourists means…” and “Choosing to spend the time…” also interrupt the conclusion’s sentence structure. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and combine the final fragments into complete sentences. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
