IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Concern for the environment is growing rapidly and more and more people are choosing to be 'eco-tourists' - travelling in responsible, environmentally-friendly ways. As a result, the eco-tourism industry is expanding.

To what extent do you think this is a positive trend?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

People are getting more aware about the environmental issues. The popularity of eco-tourism is rising rapidly. In my opinion, the expansion of this industry remains predominantly a positive trend, with a small number of drawbacks.

Eco-tourists are more responsible about environments and wildlives. First of all, they do not pollute the area by throwing garbage or plastics. In conventional tourism people are not that aware and they do not manage waste properly. In this regard eco-tourism helps maintain the biodiversity and cleanliness. Moreover, eco-tourist stay in lodges that are environment friendly. Whereas generally in the popular destinations, luxurious hotels are built to cater the tourists, which are detrimental for the environment and local specieses.

Furthermore, eco-tourism is needed to support the local economies of the places that are environmentally vulnurable. Local communities are often dependent on tourism industry. For example, in Cox's Bazar local people work as guides and sell local products. If the tourists are restricted, they would be badly impacted. But because of conventional tourism, the beach areas are getting polluted. There are plastics and garbadge that are degrading the environment. Instead, eco-tourism could be a good way to protect the areas and prevent local people's to be in a loss. However, lots of businesses pose as eco friendly but in reality they are adding to the degradation of the environment. The risk of greenwashing remains concerning.

In conclusion, eco-tourism can contribute to the saving of environment and local economies. The positive impact could be far greater if the small portion of risks could be prevented.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you consider the expansion “predominantly a positive trend,” while acknowledging drawbacks. You address both environmental protection and economic benefits, and the Cox’s Bazar example helps make the local-employment point concrete. The discussion of greenwashing also shows awareness of a relevant limitation. These ideas are generally extended and supported, although some claims remain broad: for instance, the contrast between eco-tourists and conventional tourists is asserted without a specific example or explanation of how responsible practices are ensured. The conclusion restates your view but could draw together the environmental and economic arguments more explicitly. Developing the evidence and qualification behind your main claims would make the response more fully persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs with distinct environmental and economic emphases, and a conclusion. The progression from environmental benefits to local livelihoods and then greenwashing is understandable, and linking phrases such as “First of all,” “Moreover,” and “However” help signal relationships. This coherent arrangement is a strength. At times, however, connections are mechanical or unclear. “Whereas generally in the popular destinations” is not smoothly attached to the preceding point, and “Instead” does not clearly show how the following sentence contrasts with the discussion of pollution. The economic paragraph also moves quickly from local jobs to beach pollution and then to greenwashing. Use more precise referencing and transitions to show how each point supports your overall argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “local economies,” “environmentally vulnerable,” and “greenwashing.” These terms help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate choices. However, several word forms, collocations, and spellings reduce precision: “wildlives” is not the natural plural here, “responsible about environments” is awkward, and “garbadge,” “vulnurable,” and “specieses” are misspelled or incorrectly formed. Phrases such as “in a loss” and “adding to the degradation” also need more idiomatic wording. Aim to use familiar environmental vocabulary accurately before reaching for less common expressions, and check spelling and collocation during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If the tourists are restricted, they would be badly impacted” and a concession introduced by “However.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “eco-tourist stay in lodges,” the subject and verb do not agree; “the tourists” is also needed after “cater” in “built to cater the tourists.” The construction “prevent local people's to be in a loss” is not grammatically formed, and “the small portion of risks could be prevented” has an unclear article and noun relationship. Review agreement, articles, and verb patterns, and check that clauses are joined in a complete, natural structure. Greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the response.
