Student answer (Band 5.5)

The map illustrates how town square and surrounding area looks in 2014 and it's reconstruction plan of area to be finished by 2020.

Overall, in 2014 town square have so much space. It also have limited amount of shops with some big area but all this space are reorganize and make it little bit small and also use space and make some shops and other stuff.

In 2014, town hall and fish market was near to each other, in 2020, it replace by super market and town hall. In center of the area bandstand was there but in 2020 instead of that it add plant beds, children's playground and covered seating. On the left hand side there was history museum and library before, but it re-engineered into local artist's gallery.

Although, Fountain is the only thing which is not replace or cut down from center. In 2014, In bottom side fish restaurant on left hand side and bar was on right hand side but it was change into bar and only restaurant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two time periods and report several relevant changes, including the supermarket replacing the fish market, the gallery replacing the museum, and the fountain remaining in the centre. However, the overview is vague: saying the square has “so much space” and that it becomes “little bit small” does not clearly summarise the main development. Some details are inaccurate or unclear. The bandstand was replaced by a playground, while plant beds and covered seating were added elsewhere; they did not all take its place. The library is not mentioned as a continuing feature, and the eastern shops and expanded bars and restaurants are omitted. A clearer overview and more precise coverage of the major changes would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing changes, and the sequence generally moves from the earlier map to the planned one. Linking phrases such as “In 2014” and “in 2020” help establish the comparison. However, progression is weakened by unclear references and loosely connected details. For example, “instead of that it add plant beds, children's playground and covered seating” makes it difficult to understand which features replace the bandstand and where they are located. The final paragraph also shifts abruptly from the fountain to the southern buildings. Grouping changes by location and using clearer comparisons would improve the flow and make the relationships between features easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “near to each other,” “in the centre,” “left hand side,” and “replaced,” so the reader can identify several locations and changes. However, the range is limited and some word choices are imprecise or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. Phrases such as “so much space,” “other stuff,” and “cut down from center” are too informal or unclear for an academic map report. “Re-engineered” is also not a natural way to describe a building’s new use. Aim for precise terms for locations and changes, such as “north-western section,” “converted into,” and “remained unchanged,” and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast beginning “Although” and comparisons between 2014 and 2020. However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. Examples include “town square have,” “it replace,” and “it add,” where subject–verb agreement and verb forms are incorrect. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in “how town square and surrounding area looks” and “Although, Fountain is the only thing.” Several sentences join contrasting time periods with commas rather than forming clear clauses, and capitalisation is inconsistent. Practise accurate past and future forms, agreement, and complete sentence structures before adding more complex clauses.
