IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagrams illustrate how a town square and its surrounding changed from 2014 and after the development of the area completed in 2020.
Overall, it is evident that the area was planed to undergo tremendous changes in the given period. Developmental changes particularly the new additions to the area such as children's playground, plant bedsm shops and seating arrangements made the town more attractive for the residents.
In 2014, the central area was occupied by a fountain, east to which were adiministrative buildings and on the west was a history museum and a library from north to south. A fishmarket and a town hall was on the northwest and northeastern conrner of the town respectively. A fish resturant and and a bar was in the south. In front of the appartment buildings was a bus stand.
Coming to the plan for 2020, only the central fountain and town hall remained the same remained, whereas the fish market, history museum, fish resturant and the bar was replaced by supermarket, local artist's galaries, and bars and resturants. Administrative buildings are changed into several shops. The library and the bus stand is removed. plant beds and covered seatings are placed to hte north and south of the fountain res

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main purpose of the plans and give a useful overview that the square will undergo substantial change, while noting that the fountain and town hall remain. Several important transformations are also reported accurately, including the supermarket replacing the fish market, shops replacing the administrative buildings, and the gallery taking the museum’s place. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the bandstand is called a “bus stand,” and the response says it is removed without explaining that a children’s playground occupies its former position. The library’s removal is noted, but the new covered seating and plant beds are only briefly located, and the final description is cut off. Develop the comparison more fully by describing the key changes around the square and their positions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of 2014 and then the 2020 plan. This gives the reader a generally logical route through the information, and transitions such as “Overall,” “In 2014,” and “Coming to the plan for 2020” help signal the stages. The comparison is less smooth in places, however. The long sentence listing what was replaced combines several changes without clearly matching each old feature to its new use, and “only the central fountain and town hall remained the same remained” disrupts the flow. The final sentence ends abruptly, leaving the account incomplete. Use clearer grouping by location or by unchanged and replaced features, and ensure each sentence is complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “central area,” “northwest,” “replaced,” “additions,” and “seating arrangements,” which helps communicate the planned changes. There is also an attempt to use more formal language in “undergo tremendous changes.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make details harder to identify: “planed,” “adiministrative,” “galaries,” and “resturant” are examples. “Bus stand” is an inaccurate label for the bandstand, while “plant beds” and “covered seatings” are not natural descriptions in this context. Aim for accurate, consistent map terminology and check spelling carefully; precise phrases such as “flower beds” and “covered seating areas” would make the description clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and more complex comparisons, for example, “whereas the fish market, history museum, fish resturant and the bar was replaced…” This shows some range, but control is uneven. Agreement errors occur in “A fish market and a town hall was” and “The library and the bus stand is removed”; plural subjects require plural verb forms. The opening also uses an awkward time construction (“from 2014 and after the development”), and “only the central fountain and town hall remained the same remained” repeats the verb and makes the sentence difficult to follow. Some sentences are understandable, but these errors and the unfinished final sentence reduce accuracy. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, tense consistency, and sentence completion.
