Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the task by identifying the main features of the town square development. However, the overview is somewhat generic and lacks a clear summary of the most significant trends, such as the shift from public/cultural spaces to commercial ones. While the student mentions several changes, the description of locations is occasionally confusing (e.g., 'on the down side of the fish market'). The response covers the main points, but the lack of precise spatial referencing and a more analytical overview limits the score. To improve, ensure that the main trends are highlighted in the overview and that spatial descriptions are clear and accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as the repetitive use of 'on the down side' or 'in the south direction'. The logical progression between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, which makes the flow feel a bit disjointed. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and more precise referencing to guide the reader through the map changes.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward word choices or non-standard collocations, such as 'have looking', 'made-up', and 'sopping center' (likely a typo for shopping center). The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic descriptive terms. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise terminology related to urban planning and development, and pay closer attention to correct collocations and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'there are so many changes are occurred', 'town hall had remain same', and 'new plant beds was developed'. These errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and tense usage, are noticeable. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring correct verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, will significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of the writing.
