Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two pie charts illustrate the percentages of reasons why some people choose to leave the UK while others choose to stay in the UK.

Overall, it is evident that quality of life is the most significant reason for leaving the UK. On the other hand, family and friends account for the highest proportion of people who choose to stay in the UK.

Looking at the first pie chart in more detail, quality of life is the most common reason, accounting for 37%, followed by financial reasons at 24%. Employment accounts for 18%, whereas weather represents 12%. Family and friends are the least common reason, making up only 9%.

In contrast, among people who choose to stay in the UK, family and friends record the largest proportion at approximately 43%. Social life ranked second with 21%. Financial reasons and employment each accounted for 15%, while language was the least common reason, representing only 11%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The task instructions explicitly asked for a description of a town square development plan based on a provided image. Instead, the student wrote a report about two pie charts regarding reasons for leaving or staying in the UK. Because the student failed to address the actual prompt provided, the task achievement score is severely impacted. While the writing itself is coherent and grammatically sound, it does not fulfill the requirements of the specific task question at all. To improve, it is essential to carefully read the prompt and analyze the visual data provided before beginning to write.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Despite the content being irrelevant to the prompt, the structure of the essay is logical and well-organized. The student uses clear paragraphing, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Looking at the first pie chart', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is logical, and referencing is clear throughout the text. If the content had matched the prompt, this would be a very strong performance in terms of coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary used is appropriate for a report-style task. The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'account for', 'proportion', 'significant', and 'ranked'. There is a good level of precision in describing the data, such as 'the highest proportion' and 'the least common reason'. The language is natural and fits the context of describing statistical data well. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The student displays a good command of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'Overall, it is evident that quality of life is the most significant reason for leaving the UK.' Punctuation is accurate, and the sentence construction is generally error-free. The use of comparative structures ('more common', 'largest proportion') is handled correctly. The grammar is consistent and supports the clear communication of the ideas presented in the text.
