IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The given diagrams display the changes that are to be made to a town square, including neighbouring areas. Such developments prove to be quite significant.
In the outline for the design to be completed by 2020, the main detail that stands out at first glance would be the addition of several partitions to be made into a multitude of restaurants and bars. This differs from the original design, where large blocks can be seen occupied by a restaurant and a miniature bar. However, we can see that the library, which was previously prominent, has been ommited from the final design.
Additionally, the new outline illustrates two sets of veiled outdoor seating areas that the original design had lacked. Alongside the seats, a children's playground was constructed. Over and above that, several replacements can be seen. The fish market that previously occupied the top-left area was transformed into a supermarket. Right infront of it, a local artist's gallery took the place of the history museum. To the north of the fountain that was to remain stationary and untouched, a couple plant beds were to be added, and the bandstand removed. Lastly, where administrative buildings had previously filled the area, shops were to be built, with an alley in the middle allowing for movement.
In conclusion, the outline suggests hopes of many upgrades regarding the town square's design and whatever else surrounds it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully identified the main features of the town square development. You provided a clear overview and highlighted key changes, such as the replacement of the fish market and the museum, and the addition of seating and a playground. However, the response could be improved by providing a more structured comparison between the two years. While you mention the library was omitted, you could have more explicitly contrasted the overall layout of 2014 with the 2020 plan to better highlight the transformation. The inclusion of specific details like the fountain remaining untouched is excellent, as it demonstrates a close reading of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs focusing on different aspects of the development, and a brief conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Over and above that', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through the changes. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different types of developments. The flow of information is generally smooth, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to better link the comparison of the two time periods. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, using terms like 'partitions', 'transformed', 'prominent', and 'stationary'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'ommited' (omitted) and 'infront' (in front), which do not impede communication but slightly affect the overall impression. You attempt to use descriptive language, which is appropriate for this task. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring spelling accuracy for common academic terms. The vocabulary is generally well-suited to the context of describing urban development.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'a couple plant beds were to be added' (missing 'of') and 'whatever else surrounds it' (which is slightly informal). However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause difficulty for the reader. Your control over tense usage is generally good, effectively distinguishing between the existing state in 2014 and the planned changes for 2020. Continued practice with complex sentence structures will help improve your accuracy further.
