Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram compare a town square and its surrounding building in 2014 with plan redevelopment to be completed by 2020.

Looking at the surrounding building first, fish market will be converted into supermarket, in the meanwhile history museum will be replaced by local artist gallery, library will be split into two equal different sections, the front section will be taken over by the bar and restaurants. Administrative buildings will be separated into small different shops. The town hall will remain at the same location as it was before. Apart from these changes there are also major redevelopment changes which will be implemented inside the area like: Addition of two different covered seating sections, children's playground for kids to play, fountain remains in the center, bandisland will removed from the previously located section and new two plant beds will be installed in a straight line separated from each other by a gap in between.

Overall the new structure is given to make new sections and shops available in the market for the city furthermore to make it more attractive, it also now appeals parents as there is a children's playground there so that children can play there while parents shop around or eat around by the nearby places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the diagram, including the changes to the buildings and the additions to the square. You successfully identified the conversion of the fish market and the museum, as well as the new amenities like the playground and seating. However, the overview is slightly weak; while you mention the purpose of the changes, it would be better to highlight the most significant trends, such as the shift from commercial/civic use to more leisure-oriented facilities. The description of the 'bandisland' (bandstand) and the plant beds is clear, but ensure you maintain a formal tone throughout, avoiding informal phrasing like 'kids to play'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized, moving from the surrounding buildings to the internal features of the square. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Looking at the surrounding building first' and 'Apart from these changes', which help guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is a bit unbalanced, and some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus. The final paragraph serves as a summary, but it could be more effectively integrated into the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the changes, such as 'converted', 'replaced', 'redevelopment', and 'implemented'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'plan redevelopment' (should be 'planned redevelopment') and 'bandisland' (likely 'bandstand'). Additionally, phrases like 'kids to play' are too informal for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, focus on using more precise terminology for urban planning and avoid repetitive phrasing. Your spelling is generally accurate, but watch for minor errors in word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The diagram compare' (should be 'compares'), 'fish market will be converted' (missing articles: 'the fish market'), and 'new two plant beds' (should be 'two new plant beds'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, the use of articles, and word order within noun phrases. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also be beneficial.
