IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows a town square and surrounding area in 2014 and the plans for development of the area to be completed by 2020. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagrams compare the layout of a town square and its surrounding area in 2014 with the proposed redevelopment to be completed by 2020.

Overall, the town centre is planned to become more commercial and family-friendly. While the town hall and central fountain will remain, many existing building will be replaced by new facilities, including shops, restaurants, a supermarket, a children's playground and a local art gallery.

In 2014, the northern side of the square contained a fish market and the town hall, whereas the western side included a history museum and a library. A bandstand stood in the middle of the sqaure, with a fountain located nearby. At the southern end were a fish restaunrant and a bar, while the eastern side was occupied by administrative buildings.

By 2020, several major changes are expected. The history museum will be converted into a local art gallery, and the fish market will be replaced by a supermarket. The bandstand will be removed and a plant bed will be created in its place.
